Conclusion: I purchased this scanner for its "easy set up and satisfactory scanning," which was touted by an online retailer. Reviews seemed favorable at that site, and the price was right. Unfortunately, the software that accompanied the scanner is apparently not compatible with Win 7 Home Edition,on a 64 bit laptop computer. The hard drive on this machine is empty, and this software was the second installed, after the security software.
Pros: Compact Design, High resolution, High-speed scanning, lightweight
Cons: Difficult to use, software not compatible with win 7
Excerpt: I've had nothing but "Navigator has stopped working" error messages since day one with this scanner! Canon's support is not helpful. It's a lost cause--Win 7 and this machine are apparently not compatible.
Conclusion: Horrible software packages. Finding the right way through complicated, over-sophisticated menus to find a simple way to scan a document and save it is a big hassle. After reinstalling my PC I thought it would be a shortcut to download the software, but I still had to download, try, delete a couple of packages. Why does it have to be so time consuming to get going with this scanner???
Summary: This is a great scanner to use - friendly and easy. However, there is one flaw that is prevalent that keeps this product's review at the low end. The scanner lock seems to engage and the switch will not change the lock position. A seach of this problem on the internet indicates this is common to many users. I finally had to junk this scanner as no matter what I did it would never unlock and became useless.
Conclusion: This scanner was great while it was working. Problem is it doesn't work anymore. I had it for about a month, used it very rarely, and now the bulb is burnt out. The scanner basically sits in one spot on my desk so not sure why this would happen - it's not from being jarred or anything. I saw someone else had the same issue so I assume they just have poor quality bulbs in them.
Excerpt: The directions for setup were easy enough to follow, but the scanner took a long time to perform functions. Different screens were confusing and it seemed to take forever to get my documents and pictures scanned. Most of the time I just go back to the scanning function on my copier that I have.
Summary: I bought this scanner to replace the LiDE 60 model that I had for years and only because Canon has not updated the software for the LiDE 60 to work with Mac OSX Lion (10.7) despite notes I saw on their web site that said they would. The LiDE 210 works fine and scans well. But the software supplied with it stinks big time. First, despite a option to specify where scans are saved, it always saves them into a subfolder hierarchy of the user's Pictures directory.
