Summary: The joy of sanding. Seriously. Never thought I would look forward to sanding, but with my Festool RO DX, I feel a little zen. The tool is compact and powerful. I will say the weight of the backend and hose attached does get some used to. I would recommend using two hands, one like you would use a palm sander, the other to support the back end. The extra torque on the heavy sanding mode will do quick work for rough sanding, and will take some additional control.
Summary: As a contractor and long-time woodworker, I have a lot of experience with tools. However, this was my first Festool, and after reading all the hype and on-line praise, I think I was pretty much expecting the sander to operate by itself while I just stood back and watched! It's a nice little sander all in all, but I really think there's more hype than substance in getting over 400 bucks for it.
Summary: I hate random orbital sanders with a passion. The only reason I ever used one was to polish plastics and finishes with MicroMesh discs because they're just so profoundly underwhelming otherwise. Few of them ever remove enough material to be genuinely useful as sanders, they all suck at flattening, and you can never really get away from the horrible pigtails they leave all over the place.
Summary: Used this sander for about 2 weeks now on some jewelry box projects. Wow what a difference, the power, dust collection and long lasting sanding pads have been fantastic. This is the second Festool tool I have purchased the first being the 55req track saw, it's awesome also. What I like about this sander is the ability to go from very aggressive sanding to very delicate sanding just by changing the settings on this sander.
