Summary: I purchased this two months ago because my home office is on a different floor from where my internet comes in. Since I do a lot of my work using Citrix / Remote Desktop, I needed to make sure I have a reliable, fast connection, as it's a pretty high-bandwidth package. It started off working really well -- I plugged it into the wall, installed the adapter (though it took a few attempts), and off I went. Definitely faster speeds than just wifi alone.
Summary: Granted this is a VERY late review of this powerline router, but I thought it might help at least a few ppl who bought these previously. I bought five (5) of the first version (I know they eventually released a second hardware update) back in June 2009, and the first three (3) failed on the homeplug connection after just two (2) weeks!
Summary: So I had been using 3, PLA401s for over a year now without incident. Recently I decided that in one of the rooms I had a PLA, I needed Wi-Fi to support a Wii and a couple of ipad minis. So despite the mixed reviews here I bought one based on my experience with the other devices. Well I guess disregarding the reviews was a bad idea. The powerline module of the router has died and if you try to use the scan feature it reboots the router.
Summary: I bought this item with reservations, but Its been two months without a glitch so I felt compelled to write a review. In all fairness I had to update the firmware on this device, after the latest update it has worked without hiccups. It recognized an existing zyxel powerline adapter; however, It could not recognize a couple of older linksys pla 200 through homeplug. I had hoped for this after the upgrade but it did not happen.
Summary: Nothing but trouble with this unit. Constantly needing rebooting and poor performance connecting to a PLA-470. Even Zyxel's replacement would not recognize the other Zyxel powerline units and was returned. Zyxel eventually sent me a NBG-419N router and separate PLA-401 which does work better all around but was still a very weak powerline combination.
Summary: ...for a few months. I bought a kit that included the NBG-318S and PLA-400 together back in March. I used them to replace a wireless bridge connecting computers in two different rooms. The speed is good, I get about 50Mbps actual speed, and they are on opposite ends of the house. Five months later the HomePlug connection went down. I tried resetting them, but it would not work.
Summary: Before purchase I knew they get very hot and after couple of months use one of them has started to loos WIFI Connectivity. Router works fine if I disable the wireless part. I bought two and now using other one as router and the faulty one as client slave. Going to try to get replaced from Zyxel see what happens?
Summary: This was extremely easy to setup, I ordered 2 identical hubs as it was cheaper than buying a starter kit. The wireless roaming function is also great for increasing the range of my wireless network.
