"Prosumer" switch

TnIan, Amazon
23 January 2014
  • Summary: Good feature set for the cost (and size). It'd be great for someone wanting to expand their knowledge of networking concepts without shelling out the $$$ for "enterprise" gear. One caveat: You can't upgrade the firmware through the web-based management interface. It requires a separate standalone utility, and it only runs on Windows machines.

  • Summary: Easy way to connect all your home network devices to the internet.Easy to operate and manage. Software is a little buggy so I don't recommend installing it. For the most part you don't need to manage your home network that closely.

Nice Product

ChrisH, B&H Photo

  • Excerpt: This switch has all the options I need to monitor and manage my network. Initial setup was easy and configuration was what I would expect for a switch with so many options. Had to exchange the first switch they sent me because the heatsink had fallen off in shipping. It's not supposed to rattle when you get it.
  • Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use

Does the job, seems reliable.

Karen S. Davis "nobody special", Amazon

  • Summary: I bought this for a client to replace a D-Link that had a port failure. I've been mostly happy with Netgear products' reliability. I used their smartswitches in corporate environments and they seem bulletproof, though too expensive for home office environments. This was an expansion of port count and a replacement for a home office that is accessed extensively from the field, and has to be reliable and high-performing, but on a budget.

Netgear Gig-Switch

Manuel Vasquez "HoopZeeb", Amazon
7 January 2013
  • Summary: Product is deployed @ home and is working as desired. I work in the enterprise network space and I would not recommend this unit for that space. But it is working great in my home network. The unit does have SNMP support and I manage the unit using free-software found on the web. I'm pleased with it's current deployment.

It works - what else can I say

E. Ford, Amazon

  • Summary: I'm a satisfied Netgear user - I've been using their product (mostly switches) for a few years now and I have no complaints - they do an excellent job at an excellent price. I bought this particular switch so that I could play around with gigabit ethernet and jumbo frame, and it seems to be as effective as any of the other Netgear switches I have used in the past.

Quality Control Needs to be Improved

ppmd "Professional", Amazon
7 January 2013
  • Summary: The first unit I received had a rattle. I opened up the case and the heat sink was floating loosely in the switch! Amazon took care of the return, but it was nevertheless a hassle. The replacement unit works very well. I am using it primarily to utilize the Link Aggregation (LAG) feature. I needed the Smart Switch functionality, but did not want to spend the $ and time on a managed switch. This fits the bill.

Robust Construction but Klutzy to upgrade

Boba's Daddy Figure, Amazon
7 January 2013
  • Summary: The Netgear people love to build their switches in tight little, flat metal cases. This one has that same family profile. This model is not a "dumb" style switch. You need to program it. This can be great if you need those features. If not, buy their other model without the programing. The problem you may run into, is that the firmware inside the unit as delivered is several versions out-of-date.

Will post full review once I have time to complete installation.

zenmaster43, Amazon

  • Summary: Not yet installed, so this review is subjective at the moment. When I get further along with them, I'll update this review, but for now, the advertised feature set is what I needed for this specific project.
