verdict after 1.5 years

Tsan-hui C., Newegg
31 March 2013
  • Pros: 8 Ports gigabit - per paper
  • Cons: my original router died after years of services, and I was in an urgent need to get my network working. I had to break down and went to Staples to get this FVS318G - for the 8 ports gigabit router. Although I read many negative reviews and I told myself - "those people must have bad luck" -- it was slow to start with - and I blamed my Modem being the culprit. Within a week after 318G's installation, I changed the Surfboard modem. Since then, my high speed internet has...

Proor Showing Netgear.

small business user, Staples
28 March 2013
  • Excerpt: The web UI is nice and I suppose this would be fine for home use but it crashes/resets far too often to be used for any sort of business application. Not at all what I expected from net gear.
  • Pros: Easy To Manage
  • Cons: Unreliable

Wow... it really is that bad.

Braden H., Newegg
11 January 2013
  • Pros: I literally can't come up with anything good about this unit.
  • Cons: This unit is the most unreliable-least intuitive piece of equipment I've ever used. The user interface is innacurate, it doesn't respond well to telnet, and it's up-time is less than it's downtime over the course of two weeks. I have yet to be able to keep a VPN tunnel open for more than 30 minutes before failure.

Not what I would expect from a "business" class firewall

Kevin G., Newegg
9 October 2012
  • Pros: The flashing lights look nice.
  • Cons: Even though this is a basic business firewall, I would have expected better from this device. My first device was DOA, it would start, but would have no link lights on any ports. I talked with the support for about 45 minutes and was told that the firmware was bad. I shipped this device back and was sent a new device. I plugged everything in, thinking all my problems were fixed, but, I was wrong. Like others have stated, this won't pass traffic from the LAN to WAN for...

VPN spotty at best

That guy, Staples
29 June 2012
  • Excerpt: Purchased to be used as a combination router/VPN gateway. It was difficult to set up the VPN, numerous options could not be made to function. (Example: VPN would only work in Agressive Mode, and would not function in the much-more-secure Main Mode.) Once set up, performance was very slow, with frequent pauses in network and UI functionality, often a minute or more.
  • Pros: Comprehensive
  • Cons: Complicated To Set Up, Unreliable

Don't buy this router

Chris, Staples
3 January 2012
  • Excerpt: I bought this router to use because my house is wired for Ethernet. It seemed like a good idea to use an 8 port router rather that a 4 port router and 8 port switch. One major problem though. It locks up every few hours and requires a power cycle to restore it to service. The LEDs on the LAN and WAN port suggest that everything is functioning normally but that is not the case.

Joe, Staples

  • Excerpt: caused the modem to constantly drop the internet connection. I added and amp and that improved the dropping, but it still drops once every few days. I am returning it.

Totally useless VPN

Former Netgear fan, Staples
18 January 2011
  • Excerpt: I bought this for the VPN feature, but the VPN client that comes with it is marked as no longer supported by Netgear. Why are they selling a product that is marked as end-of-life? The VPN client would not load on Windows 7 and without support it was a total waste of money.

Shame on me for to doing my research

Jeff, Staples
10 January 2011
  • Excerpt: I should have done a little more research on this product before wasting my time and money on it. It keeps crashing and then it takes forever to reboot. Its intended purpose was for the VPN functions but this has got to be the most confusing and difficult VPN to configure. Also there is NOTHING on line that helps. All Netgear's online documentation was for older versions that do not apply. Don't waste your time on this piece of junk!
