Summary: By way of background before I start the review, know that I have owned Netgear gear for many years. Netgear hubs, Netgear switches, Netgear print servers, and Netgear router-firewalls. My first router-firewall was the FVS318v1, to be followed by the FV318v3, and most recently the FVS318G (October 2014). The FVS318v1 and v3 units gave me trouble-free and dependable service for a long time.
Summary: Just bought this to create a little LAN in a lab that needs basic DHCP, with access to the corporate LAN for web/email on the clients. The quick start leaflet in the box contained numerous errors including the IP address needed to access the router itself. Powering it up in isolation, it got quite hot, and would not allow a workstation fixed to 192.168.1.2 to talk to it at 192.168.1.1, until after 30 or so attempts. Then, the router would hang intermittently.
Summary: Besides the fact that Netgear's support services is well below par, I wasted 2 months trying to get the VPN to function properly when I was finally informed it does not have the capability to support internet faster than 20mbps. I spent 2 months with a level 2 tech trying to figure out why our internet was dropping for 50mbps to 20 when it went through the firewall. I was told to upgrade the firmware and many other steps.
Summary: This devise gave up after 16 month in a home network environment. I had expected more. After troubleshooting with Time Warner (that I definitely expected to be at fault) I ended up bypassing the Netgear with a Belkin router and voila - back in business without any problems. This investment was in the drain and now shopping for a new 8 port devise. As I read more online there are many similar reviews on this devise. I wish I had done better homework before buying.
Summary: Frequently Lost Connectivity within the first week, ugh how frustrating, why by a product that doesn't work! Not to bad set up and configuration. Worked great first evening, but by the second evening, the product dropped the WAN connection and I wasn't able to log in to it. I had to reboot the device multiple times, which worked after some tries, then eventually I coudn't get the WAN connection to either LINK or get an INET connection and I couldn't log into the device...
Summary: I got this router on Tuesday. It's locked up hard at least 4 times a day since then. My son tells me he is getting corrupted downloads. All this is documented on Netgear's forums. Should have looked there before I orderd. There is supposedly a beta firmware patch that fixes this stuff since March (still in beta for some reason) but try to get them to give it to you! THe tech promised to send it to me when I talked to him yesterday.
