Summary: Unit works as advertised; however, the seller marketed this unit as "New", when in fact it was not! Inner packaging was missing and there was product registration materials that did not belong to this unit or any other unit sold by NETGEAR. I give the NETGEAR product 5 stars. Firewall works great!
A excellent perimeter defense appliance with outstanding remote VPN capabilities
22 September 2011
Summary: As a security consultant, I consult people everyday on the need for a solid defense-in-depth strategy to protecting their network resources from potential attacks. The same applies to your home networks! Most broadband/HSI providers do not provide much in terms of securing "your assets", but rather, are interested in protecting their own.
Summary: I use these firewall routers exclusively for small business. I've heard others complain about the VPN capability, but I've never had a problem. I have them setup on small "mom & pop" shops. They are stable, durable, easily configured, have OK security features and allow VPN remote access. I've been using the FVS318's since thier introduction, the first ones I installed several years ago - still work great. No unusual packet loss after several years.
Summary: I am the sole IT person for a company that has several branch offices and they are all equipped with one of these routers. They are updated to the latest firmware which may play a key role in my success with these routers, but so far I couldn't be happier. Not one has had a problem that couldn't be resolved with a power cycle.
Certainly the best near $100-$150 firewall/VPN router available.

Summary: I'm well acquainted with all three hardware versions (1,2,3) of this router. This, also, is my top recommendation to anyone wanting an easy to install, no maintenance security device for home or small business use (under 25 users). No other product I sell in the under $100 category can even come close to this router.
Summary: This device works great and has been the best of it's kind I've used for the price range. I currently access about 6 of these devices using SofteRemoteLT on a daily basis and I am very pleased with the performance. The VPN is rock solid and great for running terminal services over. If you are looking to send files over your VPN, I only got about a 6Mbps throughput rate when I used Chariot and 3DES to test it in my lab (my Linksys BEFSX41 got about 16Mbps).
Summary: Hello - I see that there are a mix of reviews, so I'll try to put my angle in perspective. I am an advanced home user in the respect that I am pretty knowledgeable about basic networking and have a basic lab at home with three PCs. Anyway, my needs are strictly limited to (1) providing the most security for my PCs and (2) allowing the networked PCs to see each other when needed.
Great home or small office true "firewall" and router.

Summary: I have been using the Netgear FVS318 router firewall for over a month now with not one glitch. For the money, this is an amazing bargain considering it is a true SPI firewall and a certified ipsec VPN endpoint for eight tunnels included with a eight port switch! The quality of Netgear products are also commendable. We had it up and running in less than fifteen minutes.
Summary: I have been using and selling FVS318's for several years now and they have been uniformaly superb. Only later did I learn that these boxes have a few limitations. They are supremely easy to set up, plenty of internet-searchable support, and easy to VPN. The price is fantastic and they are rock-solid. However, they are very limited by their throughput and bandwidth. The older v1's and v2's are even more limited. If you need these things, get an FVS338.
A great full featured firewall/router with no hassels
11 November 2007
Summary: I bought this router when, after switching modem's to a Motorola SurfBoard, my old SMC Barricade router/firewall would not communicate with it. SMC was worse than useless when I sought service help since the router was out of warranty (note to self -- avoid SMC products in the future). Anyway, I bought this Netgear router as it was the only one with 8 ports and firewall at a reasonable price.
