Decent, in the right environment

  • Pros: I was actually surprised at how easy installation was using the supplied CD. Typically router installation CDs are clunky and not very intuitive. The instructions were well written and I don't see the average user having much trouble at all installing this device. I think it took me longer to unbox the router than it did to get it up and running.
  • Cons: The range is pretty bad and the speed at any appreciable distance seems to drop off exponentially. If you have a larger house or multiple floors, I would keep looking. As soon as I stepped outside, my device could no longer locate the network. My house is brick and I was probably only about 30' from the router. Going upstairs isn't too bad, but my little TrendNet blows this out of the water for around the same price point.

Decent, but there are better

  • Summary: I also hate the fact that this has only 10/100 ethernet. Gigabit, in my opinion, should be standard at this point for wired connections regardless of wireless radio. Still, this is easily reminded with a cheap gigabit switch.
  • Pros: This router is very similar to the E900, although in practice it seemed to perform slower via the wifi radio for some reason. Still, it was stable and although the firmware is somewhat frustrating given that every update basically needs a reboot, once it's setup you don't have to mess with it again.
  • Cons: I was a little disappointed with the wifi performance. I have three other access points to test against. Linksys EA6700, ASUS RT-AC66R, Xirrus 520 (enterprise class). All of the other access points performed as they should, but the E1200-NP was slower than them all by about 10-15%. Again, not a deal breaker but if you want maximum speeds on 2.4 GHz, there are better options.

  • Excerpt: So far, so good. Piece of cake to get it setup using a custom network name and password. Much stronger signal than the router it replaced, something I was concerned about with the internal antenna. I would much rather see an external, and replaceable, antenna so I could put one of the larger antennas I have to extend the range out to the barn. The limitation of built in antennas are definitely a minus, but the outrageous price of routers with them force me to downgrade.
  • Pros: Easy To Set Up
  • Cons: Poor Default Setting
