Great Features - Asus Tech Support Lacking

Timothy S., Newegg
15 January 2014
  • Summary: I upgraded to the latest firmware as soon as I got this unit. I was impressed with the features especially the VPN. I set that up and connected with my iPhone no prob! You also get a free account with Asus's DDNS service which was great. Unfortunately, the router kept wanting to change my username and/or password - I'd have to reset it which made we have to set the entire router up each time.
  • Pros: Price VPN Featureset precludes necessity third party firmware DDNS free through asus Did I mention Featureset?
  • Cons: Asus tech support

Dead after a year

Timothy H., Newegg
21 May 2013
  • Summary: Get a Netgear. We use them at work and they rarely fail. Worth the extra bucks. It'll save you money in the long run.
  • Pros: Cheap
  • Cons: Cheap. Died after a year.

Fails under load

Matthew K., Newegg
27 March 2013
  • Summary: These are great if you just need to add more ports or for testing things, but don't use them for anything you'd consider mission critical.
  • Pros: cheap & durable in harsh environments (crawlspace/attic)
  • Cons: These fail under a heavy load. I bought three of these, one for management and two for iSCSI. Testing iSCSI I was getting throughput of around 70MB/s. On the management side while on IPsec VPN, I was continually getting disconnects. Power cycling the switch helped, but the problem returned shortly thereafter. Replacing the switch with a spare 10/100 fixed the problem.

Good for the money

Patrick M., Newegg
17 December 2012
  • Summary: I havent had the trouble that a few of the other reviewers have had. Other than a few power outages in the building, the device has been constantly powered, and has never dropped a connection. Great switch at a great cost.
  • Pros: GigE, small, simple
  • Cons: None that I can find

Fails under load

Fletcher H., Newegg
29 October 2012
  • Pros: It's a gigabit switch
  • Cons: When doing sustained transfers of large amounts of data (hundreds of gigabytes), the switch drops all network connections (all link lights go dark) and will not work until power cycled. The area where I have it is well ventilated, so heat should not be in issue unless the device has inadequate cooling. I can't recommend a switch that randomly stops switching.

Nice budget Gig switch

Allan M., Newegg
3 April 2012
  • Summary: Perfect for home or small office.
  • Pros: Small form factor, doesn't light up like a Christmas tree and illuminate your entire office. Works perfectly, no issues so far. Very inexpensive for a device with a 10gbps backplane.
  • Cons: None

2nd chance

Anthony S., Newegg
22 February 2012
  • Summary: Defects happen.
  • Pros: First one of these I bought works like a charm. It was cheap but has worked perfect. Tech support answered all my questions.
  • Cons: I bought a second one and it was defective out of the box. It powered on but No link lights. I'm getting a rplacement sent to me. Since the first one works so good, I'm giving them another chance.

Cheap, works

Michael S., Newegg
9 February 2012
  • Summary: If, like me, you're looking for something cheap to share one ethernet connection between several devices in your home entertainment system (game console, HTPC, BD ...), look no further.
  • Pros: Works fine, plug and play, auto crossover means no fuss.
  • Cons: Single, 1-color LED per port shows activity only, no indication of speed, duplex, etc.
