Unit OK, D-Link Warranty "rules" make the Warranty nearly useless

D M., Newegg
1 December 2011
  • Pros: I own three of these units; two (2) DGS-2208 and one (1) DGS-2205 My experience with the unit has been about par for what I expected of a lower cost gigabit switch. I have returned one of the DGS-2208's and the DGS-2205 for warranty replacement. Two of the power supplies have quit as well but I b...
  • Cons: What I am going to describe is not what you'll find in the actual warranty. Rather it is the policies D-Link has adopted for their RMA procedures. Be forewarned that these policies can make the warranty almost useless. Let us say that your unit quits after 26 months as my 5-port did. The first pa...

  • Summary: I may be one of the few reviews here offering life cycle (3 year) experience. I own three of these units; two (2) DGS-2208 and one (1) DGS-2205 My experience with the unit has been about par for what I expected of a lower cost gigabit switch.

No Jumbo Frames

Brian D., Newegg
2 May 2011
  • Summary: I rated it so low because the documentation lied about the features. There are plenty of switches out there for a cheap price. Most do not support jumbo frames so if one is going to claim support, it dang well better deliver. If you don't care about jumbo frames, this could be a good switch.
  • Pros: Good cheap switch. Works well and seems to be reliable after 4 months.
  • Cons: Does not support Jumbo Frames. I manage networks and have a very firm grasp of what Jumbo Frames are and how to configure devices to work on a network supporting mtu's of 9000. This device does not correctly support jumbo frames even though the documentation clearly states they do. I called D-Lin...

Easy come, easy go.

Travis P., Newegg
5 November 2010
  • Summary: I have a WD live TV box hooked up to it with about 80 feet of Cat5e ethernet cable. It was unable to keep a stream of 12mbps (thats bits not bytes) over the 100mbps connection. I then tested that same cable from the switch to my server on a gigabit connection and it was able to do 800Mbps sustained.
  • Pros: Fast gigabit speeds, was able to get over 800Mbps through put (until I ran into a disk IO barrier). Easy to use, plug and play. Runs cool. Has the ports on the back with indicator lights on the front.
  • Cons: Does not handle longer runs to 10/100 devices well. Most likely because of the "Green" auto sensing voltage (Because we need to save that extra 8 cents a year) Cheap feeling

You get what you pay for

Sebastian J., Newegg
13 October 2010
  • Summary: I had one for about three years. Lately (last month or so) certain devices have been dropping connectivity. I looked in my network panel to see if the switch may have been the issue, and of course I have the blinking lights of death. It thinks there's a packet storm. Well there isn't.
  • Pros: When it works, it just works.
  • Cons: Poor reliability.

it all depends...

Shane L, Amazon
26 February 2009
  • Summary: ...which hardware version you have. as one of the user reviewed, only hardware version 2 does not throttle back to 10/100 when you have mixed network. i was hope against hope that it's been a long time since the switch has been out, so i'd probably get a newer version of the hardware. but no luck.
