Very poor instructions. Doesn't work on first set up
16 September 2014
Summary: Very poor instructions. Doesn't work on first set up, even following instructions, and you have to get in touch with support in order to get new instructions and above alla an updated firmware. I would not recomend it to begginer's.
Summary: IT pro here, can't speak for the USB functions, but the Wifi repeater function is not good. It slowed my existing connection down by 60% and when I connected it to my existing network it went from 80% signal to 8%. This is just not meant to be used as a repeater, I even changed firmware versions and have a D-link 655 extreme router. Don't buy this as a repeater!
Summary: I don't know what I was doing wrong, but the item certainly came on fine, but it did not connect to ANYthing. There wasn't a single dlink connection available in my list of "connections". Such a waste.
Summary: The appeal of the unit was variety of utility it offered... router access point, repeater, USB charger, etc. However, in my experience, this unit fails as a repeater. I am still holding out hope that it serves a purpose as a router access point while travelling. Pros: -Inexpensive -Size -Fold-up outlet prongs -USB charger Cons: -Could never get repeater to generate a useful signal -Configuration interface is challenging (probably true of similar products)
Summary: Thought I would love this router as a replacement for my aging WTR-54GS, but I'm very disappointed with it. First, the router is noticeably slow -- I tried it out in a hotel with both wired and wireless connections available, and noticed a significant speed hit using the DIR-505L instead of the provided wireless. Second, the "SharePort Mobile Companion" software for iOS does not even support this router!
Summary: This is the type of product that should function in an easy way, but this is not he case. I tried to use it as repeater of a D-Link router and the management of the DIR 505 is in conflict with that of the router. Anyway, laptops and tablets connect to the repeater, but this cannot get an IP address from the router. I hope I may solve my problems, but for the moment I'm disappointed with this companion.
Summary: The DIR-505 is designed to be the perfect companion to the road warrior. It provides three different modes (Router/Access Point, Repeater, Wi-Fi Hotspot) that are easily switchable via a hardware button, an Ethernet port and a USB connector so you can share files from a memory stick or a USB hard drive -- or more mundanely charge your phone.
Summary: I bought this item to use primarily as a Wifi repeater on my home network. It caused more dropouts than I was having before I installed it. That may be because this vendor ships from China with Chinese firmware (v1.02CN) installed on it. I tried, unsuccessfully to install the current North American firmware (v1.03). So I have no idea if that would alleviate the problem.
Summary: This is not a bad little router, but honestly, if I had to do it again, I would not purchase it. Silly me, I thought that since it's marketed as a travel router (i.e., "Mobile Companion") that it would have more features that would make it convenient for a road warrior such as myself to use.
