Unstable @ 6 months, died @ 9 months; NO TECH SUPPORT
17 February 2014
Summary: Don't buy unless you are willing to junk it when it stops working--product became unusable after 6 months and it is impossible to reach their tech support (I have wasted hours trying to reach).
Pros: Initially (when it worked) high speed, even when not using AC protocol, Good software interface
Cons: Wireless became highly unstable, dropping devices and/or not letting them connect, after 6 months. After 9 months, wireless did not work at all. TECH SUPPORT IS WORTHLESS--they do not answer. DO NOT BUY FROM ASUS, WHICH DOES NOT SUPPORT USERS!
Systemic power button flaw. Love this router otherwise, Using Merlin firmware,

Summary: Be aware that after about 1.5 years the power button goes out on these. Temporary fix is to either use tape to hold the button in or push a toothpick to jam the button in the on position. Asus will not cross ship for repair so you will be out your router the time it takes to get it repaired.
Excerpt: I have been using this router for over a month. Although it has a bunch of nice features, such as creating different WI-FI networks (i.e. for guests), Cloud storage, FTP, etc.) the router is not fully Mac compatible (regardless of the Apple icon on the box), all software included with router is PC...
Pros: Cloud Storage, Fast Connection Speed, Ftp Capability
Cons: Clumsy Ui, Poor Customer Support, Poor Wi-fi Range, Windows Only Software
Summary: I could not set this router up using my Windows 8 machine. The WIN 8 firmware would neither open or install and seemed to be still under development Finally, I was able to set up at least the internet connection using a Win 7 laptop wirelessly.
Good coverage, fast speed, defective menuing system.

Summary: Fast but buggy.
Pros: Speed and coverage
Cons: No matter what browser I used, the menu to control the router would become corrupted. I spoke to tech support. They were clueless. Others have posted about the same issue, so they must have some sort of firmware bug.
Usable with frustration; not for the average consumer

Summary: I purchased this in September 2012 and put it under a load. When it works, the range is excellent, the throughput is a dream, the configuration is pretty easy. They have a Firmware restoration program available on their site. And the problem is, you will need this.
If you need remote access to your network look for another router
5 November 2012
Summary: I got this router last week and my experiences are mixed so far. Fist the positive: the router is very fast and has the range no other router I tried had. With Asus EA-N66 access point as a client RT-AC66U is capable of reaching two stories straight down on very good speed.
Summary: The signal is pretty strong and stable but has trouble reaching the 2nd floor from the basement. I tested the parental control on my 9 years old little brother. It worked well for 30 seconds. That's the time it took him to figure out how to get past it.
Summary: Not ready for prime time. Subsequent AC routers will be much better, no gain in speed on N, only get if you have several AC adapters or AC ready devices. I will be returning mine.
Pros: Easy to get up and running.
Cons: Not easy to get good speeds on Shaw, router is currently at least 15-20 Mbps slower over wifi than LAN. Had better speeds on old WRT54g! Difficult language in the interface, port forwarding intermittently resets. Can only set up ONE alternate DNS which causes issues when watching Hulu in Canada.
