A reliable old friend

JustinLouis, CNET

  • Summary: I've had the Harmony 880 for almost 6 years now. When it's all set up and nothing changes in my system, it's great. Switches activities wonderfully, and responds quickly. If you're planning to add a new component or replace an old one (say, you replace a DVD player with a Blu-Ray), setting up the new device and adding it to the corresponding activity can be a hassle, sometimes forcing you to trash the activity all together and start from scratch.
  • Pros: Great for systems with lots of components
  • Cons: Adding new components or replacing old ones can be a hassle

Logitech Harmony 890 Universal Remote

  • Summary: This system nearly stopped the complaints from my wife about multiple wireless remotes. After multiple attempts to control my theaters many systems (which consists of RS1 projector, Onkyo master receiver, Sony receiver, PS-3, Dish receiver, Sony DVD, Chinese curtain puller, HDMI switcher and Lutron lighting system) All systems now operate with a single button, except one .... I gave up trying to control the on/off function of the Dish receiver model ViP 722 DVR.
  • Pros: Controls most everything, even weird off brand equipment
  • Cons: A pain to program

Great Remote

  • Summary: Works well with all my components even when the Onkyo AVR remote won't. Battery life is good. Have used this 4 years now & only on my 3rd rechargeable battery. Still love the design, altho the number buttons are getting a bit finicky, esp #2 & 3 & up volume has to be pressed really hard, so it's had a good life. Time for a new Harmony One.
  • Pros: works with everything; timeless design
  • Cons: none

Requires web service to configure but often down!

blevebass, CNET
23 July 2012
  • Summary: I would not purchase another Harmony remote until Logitech has their web server more available. I have two different model remotes which I have not been able to make changes to for 2 days now. Logitech has not released a statement nor when they expect their service to be available again. They should have an offline configuration options so when the service is down you don't need to rely on the cloud.
  • Pros: Nice screen and very configurable.
  • Cons: The myharmony web server that is mandatory to configure the remote is often down for days at a time. Making a trivial change can be frustrating if not impossible when this occurs.

  • Summary: Somewhat difficult for the average user to get set up. It can take a couple hours to figure out all of the various configuration options, from picking the correct models for your equipment to virtual button setup. This thing is programmable for just about any device you can think of, as long as it uses an IR port. I've had them working blinds, fans and computers even.

  • Summary: INTRODUCTION Requiring a universal remote for my Television, Digital Cable Box, BluRay Player, Wii and DVD Player/CD-G Karaoke Player, I chose this model for its capability of uploading programmed keys (from the internet) into the remote. I was looking for a remote that had codes that I can just upload, rather than painstakingly push buttons for the remote to 'learn' the various functions.

  • Summary: This remote is easy to set up using the included software. The functions, such as "Watch TV" and "Watch DVD" work well. However, the software only sets up basic functions. To use more advanced features of your equipment you'll have to add them manually. My equipment consists of a Dish Network PVR/Tuner and an LG BD-390 BluRay Player feeding an LCD screen. The basic remote settings don't include a way to quickly switch to programs recorded on the PVR.

  • Summary: I have owned this remote for at least a year and my cradle has finally quit altogether. Before I bought this remote, I too read all of the reviews about the bad cradle, but figured that I would try it and just return it if the cradle gave me any trouble. What I did not anticipate was that this could be a deteriorating issue. I started having problems 5-6 months into ownership. I would have to wiggle it a little bit to make good contact, but I could live with this.

  • Summary: This remote is a must for people with complex home theater setups. I have a Samsung Plasma TV, a Samsung Home Theater system, a Panasonic Blu Ray Player, a Comcast Set top Box and an Apple TV. It is seriously so easy to set this remote up. It guides you through a list of questions and drills down to your exact product. Be sure to have exact model numbers on hand. Also, I was able to customize the exact wording of each "Activity".
