See lessIt’s an indication of how comfortably the Award-winning Onkyo TX-SR605 led the £400-ish receiver pack that its replacement, this TX-SR606, was the subject of rabid speculation on the whathifi.com forums for almost two months earlier in 2008. Anticipation was reaching fever pitch by the time we got our hands on an example, and as it's five-star demonstrated, it may not be another huge leap forward but the ’606 receiver is still mightily impressive. The TX-SR606 grabs... Read more
Onkyo has upgraded its most popular HDMI-1.3a-capable home theater receiver by adding 1080i video upscaling, two additional HDMI inputs to handle a total of four HDMI sources, Audyssey's new Dynamic EQ loudness compensation technology, and Onkyo's new Music Optimizer circuit. The new Onkyo TX-SR606 replaces the company's best selling TX-SR605. This receiver also has a powerful 90 watt-per-channel amplifier section, Remote Interactive control over HDMI (RIHD), is Sirius... The great thing about technol-ogy is that everything eventually becomes affordable. The latest generation of A/V receivers certainly demonstrates this, and the Onkyo TX-SR606 exemplifies the extraordinary features and performance capabilities of AVRs under $600. Read more
While the $579 price tag qualifies this product as "mid-range" and not "entry level" in the grand scheme of receivers, such value in an HDMI-switching Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio all-in-one is hard, maybe impossible to match. For me, the two extra HDMI outputs alone make this receiver worth the increase from the previous generation's $499. The additional refinements of the Music Optimizer, 1080i upscaling and Audyssey Dynamic EQ loudness compensation are delicious... Read more
Interestingly, the TX-SR606 surpasses Sony's much more expensive STR-DA4300ES ($1299) in the power department at high volume levels, and the Onkyo has one additional HDMI input to boot. The Sony does boast better analog video processing with the Faroudja Cortez chipset, but this doesn't justify the $700 difference in price. I own an Onkyo Pro PR-SC885 pre/pro paired with an Anthem PVA-7 multichannel power amplifier, and, as you would expect for $3600, that combination... Read more
I purchased the TX-SR606 to take advantage of its "Zone-2" feature. Zone 2 allows you to power a second set of speakers in a separate room (e.g., patio or garage). Unfortunately, Zone-2 will only work with Analog sources (like the AM/FM radio or Cassette Deck). Zone-2 will not work with digital sources (optical or coax connected devices) like a Digital Cable box or a Blu-Ray player. I like to listen to my TV or CD's (played on Blu-Ray) in other rooms and the receiver... Read more

After reading reviews and talking with sales reps, I decided on the Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver instead of the Yamaha. I am happy with my purchase as the Onkyo produces great sound and video and has many extras. However, the Onkyo has developed a loud and noticeable hummm. (I've had it about 2 months) Some of the reviews mentioned this, but I thought they were just the unfortunate few. Now, I'm one of them. I will take it in to an authorized Onkyo service repair center, but... Read more
Sound great in most respects. However, there seems to be a crackle coming over the speakers when playing anything that comes in through HDMI inputs. FM radio sounds great...very clean. But switch to movies, CDs, anything passed through and you get a very perceptible crackle, as if the tweeter was blown or something. Guess Ill call Onkyo. Otherwise VERY pleased. Read more
I would rate the Onkyo TX-SR606 six (6) stars for value! I was replacing my Pioneer VSX unit from the early 90's and was hesitant in whether or not a new A/V receiver would be worth the investment. After many months of reading reviews and ratings on A/V receivers I decided on the Onkyo 606. I was torn between the Onkyo 506, 606 and 706 models. The best value is the 606 with the 4 HDMI v1.3a inputs/output, sound output of trueHD/Dolby Digital and variety of speaker setups... Read more
