Marantz is a brand name. It was once an individual as well. What would Saul Marantz have made of the SR8002 A/V receiver? It bears little resemblance to the hi-fi products he hand-built in his home in Kew Gardens, New York, during the 1950s—or to the Japanese-made receivers that popularized component audio systems in the 1970s. Saul lived until 1997, so he was not unfamiliar with the concept of surround sound by the time he passed away—but his younger self would have ... Read more

  2. Marantz SR8002 7.1 A/V Receiver

At an MSRP of $1999, one would be hard pressed to find many receivers that provide the features and refined sound of the Marantz SR8002.  Starting with a plethora of inputs and ending with on-board decoding of high definition multi-channel audio and amp channel assignment, the receiver shines in its flexibility in particular.  Though ultimately an incremental rather than a revolutionary model upgrade from the SR8001, the SR8002 adds some useful and welcomed improvemen... 3. Marantz SR8002 A/V Receiver

Like most modern receivers, there's so much to discover in the Marantz that this review could easily stretch to novella length. So let's just cut to the chase. The sound is superb, the feature set is extensive yet user friendly, and the $2000 price tag isn't going to land most folks in the poor house. If you don't need extensive video processing (and most people don't), then I strongly recommend the Marantz SR8002 above all others I've reviewed to date. It has earned ... Read more

After 9 years, it was time to upgrade my former top-of-the-line Sony ES receiver (STR-DA 777ES) to take advantage of improved audio and high-definition video switching. After reading all the professional reviews, I settled on the Marantz SR8002. Three weeks after an extensive configuration and testing, I must say that I am pleased overall with my choice. However, several surprising configuration limitations keep me from giving it a full-on 5-star review. Let me prefac... Read more

  1. Which HD format to buy Harry Potter movies on ?

...and it's frustrating given all the lossless high-res audio on HDMI these days. He goes analog in with SACD, but then the Lex re-digitizes (another a/d/a cycle) for processing. HDMI-equipped Lex would be so sweet. Just kicked the B&K to the curb to get a Marantz SR8002 with HDMI to upgrade to lossless-digital-multichannel myself. WOW. One thought: if you found an HDMI receiver/decoder with decent DACS for cheap, you could put it between your HD DVD/BD sources (feeding HDMI) and feed the lex. Then again, in a few months a...
