Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Game Boyz
24 June 2008
  • Excerpt: It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since Lara Croft first invaded the Playstation, Sega Saturn and PC. Since the original Tomb Raider was released Lara Croft has become a household name and the franchise has sold over 30 million games to date making it one of the biggest video game series of all time. As a tribute of sorts to the original game, Eidos launches Lora Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary (TR: Anniversary for short) for the PSP.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

Auracore MediaWorks
20 February 2008
  • Summary: Lara's latest adventure makes the transition to the Xbox 360, with minimal improvements.
  • Pros: Enormous and vast tombs to explore that feature challenging and devious level design; mostly solid controls; the physics, and audio are all top notch; not a whole lot is new for the 360 version.
  • Cons: Solutions for puzzles don't always work on the first try, resulting in lots of meaningless running around; combat serves mostly as filler; missing some key features that appeared in Tomb Raider: Legend; graphical improvements over the PS2 version are minimal.

Back to the Beginning

  • Conclusion: Anniversary is not quite the game that Legend was. Though initially I was floored by how well the series had been updated, as time went on and the frustrations piled up, it started to lose the raw appeal. It's good, but not great.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary

  • Summary: Lara returns to prove that Legend was no fluke.
  • Pros: Enormous and vast tombs to explore that feature challenging and devious level design; mostly solid controls; the physics, graphics, animation, and audio are all top notch; Lara Croft still comprises the hottest polygons you've ever seen.
  • Cons: Solutions for puzzles don't always work on the first try, resulting in lots of meaningless running around; text can be blurry and hard to read on an HDTV; combat serves mostly as filler; missing some key features that appeared in Tomb Raider: Legend.

Tomb Raider Anniversary (PSP)

Gamecell
28 July 2008
  • Conclusion: Overall though, this is a superb game that played well ten years ago, and with its new lick of paint and improved controls, still plays well today. Well worth picking up if you like your 3D adventure games, this is one of the all-time greats.
  • Pros: A modern classic, Genius level design, Lots of ‘wow’ moments
  • Cons: Lack of a second analog nub harms experience slightly, Not quite as enjoyable as it would be playing it on a TV

Tomb Raider Anniversary

Gamecell
14 July 2008
  • Conclusion: Graphically Anniversary – a game that looked excellent on the PS2 - rarely makes the 360 more than tick over despite using the Legend engine. Some nice views that look impressive from a distance don’t look so good close up, and only better water, a few more particle effects and a higher resolution distinguish this from the PS2 version. Nonetheless, the environments look terrific with lighting playing a significant role in making the atmosphere right.
  • Pros: Gameplay is atmospheric and true to the original, Some great level design; familiar levels re-imagined well, Sparing use of sound effects and the classic TR theme, Just enough story to give the game dierection with no unnecessary plot, Downloadable in episodes on the marketplace
  • Cons: Adrenaline dodge (bullet time) feels tacked-on and superfluous, Some puzzles whilst updated and well designed, don’t really challenge, others will drive you mental with their deviousness, The boss battles could be more fun, Terrible clipping and a few bugs, Unhelpful camera at vital moments, Visually unimpressive
