Test Drive Unlimited

Playstation Illustrated
22 January 2008
  • Excerpt: There are some games with a nod toward realism and this usually means you get some monuments that are recognizable and maybe the roadmap of an actual city. Test Drive Unlimited takes a more ambitious tack of reproducing the entire Hawaiian island of Oahu down to the details. The roads are mapped out and have scenery that perfectly matches the layout of the island.

Test Drive Unlimited

Game Boyz
16 September 2007
  • Excerpt: With so many racing games around I was quite surprised to learn that the Test Drive franchise is the longest running series of them all. Granted it does not have the reputation of being the premiere racing video game but it does have the reputation of being the grandfather in its' class. And like a fine wine it seemingly gets better with age. Over the years the Test Drive series has certainly had some highs and lows.

Test Drive Unlimited

Defunct Games
14 June 2007
  • Summary: While some content had to be cut out of this port, Test Drive Unlimited on the PlayStation 2 is a shockingly enjoyable racing game. The island is big, there are plenty of events to race, and there are more cars in this game than you will know what to do with. This is easily one of the PlayStation 2's best racing games of the year ... not that there's much competition for that title! This product was submitted by the publisher for review.

Test Drive Unlimited

Defunct Games
12 June 2007
  • Summary: While it's not nearly as exciting as other recent racing games, Test Drive Unlimited proves to be one of the most impressive portable games I have ever seen. Think Atari can't fit the entirety of Oahu into a portable game, then you haven't seen how ambitious this handheld version really is! This product was submitted by the publisher for review. As a rule, Defunct Games does not review games we spent money on. However, that does not always apply to classic/retro games.

  • Conclusion: is a good game that gamers who enjoy games from the driving genre. It has a large number of features, for both single- and multi-player modes. While it is not as strong as releases from the is probably the best driving game out there for portable on-the-go gaming.

PSX Extreme
23 April 2007
  • Excerpt: If you think the Need for Speed series is long-running, there is a racing franchise that has been around way before EA's creation landed on the 3DO -- and that would be Test Drive. If you remember playing Test Drive back on the Atari or Commodore 64, then I applaud you. In fact, if you even remember publisher Accolade (before they got acquired by Infogrames), I still applaud you.

Evil Avatar
9 April 2007
  • Excerpt: I found the races in the PSP version of TDU to be particularly short, a design decision for sure, and a smart one at that. Gone from the PSP version are the long 15 and 17 miles treks with hitchhikers and hotties. In fact, it seems the delivery style missions are missing all-together. In their place is a new Master Points System, exclusive to the PSP/PS2 version, in which you earn points for various maneuvers.
  • Pros: Huge expansive island, little loading times, Integrated MMO type gameplay, Designed for portability
  • Cons: A few quirks when going into sleep mode on the PSP
