Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 - Innocent Sin (Sony PSP)

Diehard GameFAN
20 November 2011
  • Summary: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 – Innocent Sin may have finally made it Stateside, but not without a few problems. The translation is far from quality as this version has several edits, translation errors and other issues that will be apparent to anyone who has played through either the PSX or PSP version in Japanese. The good news is that there are very few Westerners who have, so they won’t know the difference.

  • Excerpt: Juicy rumors slide from millions of lips all over the inner city. This is a given in urban haunts, but now many of the rumors are inexplicably becoming reality. Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 - Innocent Sin follows Tatsuya and his friends as they test out one such rumor: that calling their own cell phone numbers will summon a wish-granting being known only as Joker.

Sci-fi role-playing game features anime and some violence.

  • Summary: Parents need to know that Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin is a role-playing game with turn-based combat. It was originally released in Japan in 1999. To accommodate a growing audience for the Shin Megami series in the US, the game was updated and localized here 12 years later. The entire series has always had a very niche following and contains a surrealistic presentation of humans and non-humans, including creatures known as "Personas" (doppelgangers).

Game Over Online

  • Excerpt: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 Innocent Sin was a role-playing game originally released on the PSone exclusively in Japan. Fans of the original game were left out in the cold, as they were not able to experience this sequel of sorts since it was never localized on North American shores. After a twelve-year gap, Atlus has brought the game over to Sony’s beloved handheld to give fans a chance to experience that which they missed during the PSone heyday.

Review: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 – Innocent Sin (PSP)

  • Conclusion: Overall, this is a great game for the PSP. It is true that there are some issues to consider when picking up this title, and we will be the first to admit that it is not for everyone. The graphics show a little wear and betray how old the game is. The story does take a long time to play out, and some people completely new to the genre may have difficulty figuring out what to do and where to go.

  • Excerpt: It takes a lot of guts to basically re-release a PS1 game to the current RPG generation, but you got to give points to Atlus for giving the fans what they want and even consider localizing Innocent Sin in the troubled US PSP market. Between this, the updated release of Persona 4 for the Vita, the announcement of a new Persona and the newly announced fighting game, series fans can’t complain about how well Atlus treats their fanbase.
  • Pros: Largely-preserved gameplay from the original
  • Cons: Dated, less-forgiving elements for newcomers
