Excerpt: When I was first getting into video games, the term shooter meant
something completely different than it does now. Because of this, I’ll
forever consider games like Contra, Raiden, R-Type, and Metal Slug
Excerpt: A platypus is an odd creature that is well known for having the look of being built from a collection of leftover parts from other animals. Most people have no idea what one sounds like, what it eats, or if it can do any tricks, its odd looks alone are enough to make it famous and a shoe-in for the animal hall of fame should some Midwestern city desperate for tourists ever decide to open one.
Excerpt: How to describe the look of a clay-animated game? If you remember Skullmonkeys (one of my favorite PlayStation titles) or if you're a fan of Aardman animation, you'll know what to expect from Platypus . The idea of a clay-animated shooter is cool enough and the execution here is very strong. The story behind the development of this game is interesting, if it's true.
Summary: Platypus is easily the best claymation-inspired 2D shooter on the PSP. Of course, it's also the ONLY claymation-inspired 2D shooter on the PSP. It's not a must-own game, but fans of the shooters will get a kick out of how Platypus re-imagines this once popular genre. This product was submitted by the publisher for review. As a rule, Defunct Games does not review games we spent money on. However, that does not always apply to classic/retro games.
Excerpt: There's not much to a shoot-em-up. Get a peppy little fighter, equip it with a handful of powerful weapons and send it out against a ridiculous number of enemies firing off an impossible number of shots, give the player a handful of continues so they can actually it make it a little way through the game and bam, shooter.
Excerpt: Stunning good looks highlight this imaginatively styled but otherwise traditional side-scrolling shoot-'em-up, in which you must maneuver an unassuming little ship through numerous enemy-infested stages while blasting pretty much everything in your way. Platypus is easy to play using the mouse, keyboard, or joystick, and you have the option to play simultaneously with a friend.
Pros: Gorgeous, imaginatively designed claymation-style graphics run fast and smooth, Tried-and-true twitch-based shoot-'em-up gameplay features a variety of enemies, Multiple difficulty settings and two-player-simultaneous option adds variety, Great soundtrack helps give the game an upbeat tone
Cons: A little bit of storyline probably would have helped, but there isn't any
