PaRappa the Rapper

Playstation Illustrated
9 February 2008
  • Excerpt: PaRappa the Rapper was a unique and funky game back in the day, with simplistic, yet well defined, characters with an interesting animation style that features 2D "paper cutout" characters animated in a 3D world. While this style was cool, it never really caught on, leaving PaRappa the Rapper as an interesting, although niche, title. PaRappa the Rapper is a game that is all about rhythm, so it makes sense that music would be a core factor in the game.

  • Excerpt: While the game is fun while it lasts, the problem is that there's really not much to do beyond the six stages the game offers. The multiplayer mode is just there for looks, apparently hastily appended like some sinister footnote - in it, up to four players can rap on the same song and see who gets the best score. It doesn't feel like there's any direct competition, as none of the players can affect the others in any way.

The Laser

  • Summary: Obviously, the music is one of the key elements of Parappa's enduring appeal and the tunes remain as hummable and enjoyable as ever. The memorable tracks showcase a talent for rap and their humorous, almost nonsensical lyrics have aged surprisingly well considering the shifts in popular music. The songs are a bit more kid-friendly than you probably remember, and this should make it even more broadly appealing.

PaRappa the Rapper

Defunct Games
8 August 2007
  • Summary: PaRappa the Rapper is just as much fun on the PSP as it was ten years ago on the PlayStation, unfortunately it's also the exact same game that we played all those years ago. Even with a strong presentation and great music, this "updated" PaRappa just feels like a missed opportunity to give us some extra content and a reason to spend $30 on the game a second time around! PaRappa the Rapper

Game Over Online
31 July 2007
  • Excerpt: Before there was Guitar Hero, before there was Elite Beat Agents, even before there was Dance Dance Revolution, there was PaRappa the Rapper. Released in 1997 for the PSOne, PaRappa introduced the rhythm music genre to console gamers. Now, a decade later, the classic returns for an encore performance on the PSP. After all this time, can PaRappa still throw down with the best of them? I’m happy to report that he can.

  • Conclusion: THE VERDICT: Parappa the Rapper is a personal favourite - a fantastically well-crafted game, made with love, a sense of humour and the balls to do something different. This PSP remake does exactly as it should do, by not changing the core and offering a few extras on top, as much as they may be mere window dressing. A highly recommended purchase as long as you remember: I gotta believe!
