Konami takes gamers to school -- old school, that is -- with a solid update on the classic board game. Read more

    • Interesting graphical update of the game; matches can be saved at any point; lots of potential for great online play.
    • Free-for-all Battle mode is a bit odd; initially can be difficult figuring out which piece is which; not too many folks playing online.

I had some anticipation over this game, probably held over from my initial flashback to that "battle chess" scene from the first Star Wars movie. You wouldn't be wrong to come expecting something like that cool vision from decades past. Was George Lucas cool, or what? Trying to realize a living chessboard was easier on film than in the gaming world, judging by the lack of interesting chess videogames over the years. Read more

Exercising your mind and your fingers, Online Chess Kingdoms updates the original “brain game” and brings the classic game of chess to the PSP in an entirely new format. The title introduces new modes of play, detailed fantasy graphics and groundbreaking infrastructure support in which players battle for control in a persistent online world. Read more

Nothing that you haven’t already played before. Chess has got to be one of the oldest board games in history – right up there with Snakes n Ladders. But seriously, a game of chess requires concentration, skill, planning, and strategy. That pretty much all goes out the window when playing Online Chess Kingdoms for the PSP. Read more

And that is the main idea when it comes to Online Chess Kingdoms ; it's a solid game that does very well for what it is. It delivers single and two player chess games, and provides gamers the means for online competition. It even manages to add a few interesting touches to the ever-changeless game of chess, but ultimately, is simply a portable chess game, and not a whole lot more. If you already enjoy chess, go for it. If not, this game won't really change your mind. Read more

Vicious Cycle and Infinite Interactive took a Bejeweled hybrid game and combined it with an RPG experience to make a masterpiece known as Puzzle Quest. In the same vein, Konami (developed by Leviathan Games) took the age-old game of chess and created something along the same line, though calling it a masterpiece is a large stretch. This isn't your gentleman's game of yore. Read more

Online Chess Kingdoms takes traditional chess and blends it with a fantasy world. Add in some online multiplayer, and Online Chess Kingdoms definitely sounds like a game that chess fans will be eager to play. Long ago, the God-like Phrenos created the universe from five different forces. He sculpted reality from Chaos, Magic, Order, and Reason, and with Spirit, he brought life to his great creation. For many years, the universe existed like this, in a perfect balance. Read more

Overall, Online Chess Kingdoms has its flaws, but if you're an avid fan of the is classic turn based game, it may be in your better interest to pick up a copy. It's definitely going to be one of those "love it or hate it" games for the PSP. Read more

QuickView: Good: Online play; Original Presentation Bad: Sluggish Story Mode and online interface Making a video game version of board game is always risky business. Do it right and you essentially have a digital copy of the source material; do it wrong and you have a twisted caricature of a game many already know and love. More often than not the end result in either case leaves the player wondering why they didn't just play the board game in the first place. Read more

Online Chess Kingdoms inherently has something going for it just by letting you play a competent version of chess on the PSP, once you get past all the fantasy weirdness. The online mode also works fairly well, though it's too bad the game hasn't reached a critical mass of players. In the end, Online Chess Kingdoms may even make you gain some appreciation for the underlying game, since this is proof positive that any efforts to make chess better or more exciting are...
