LocoRoco (PSP) - Review

VGChartz
18 May 2009
  • Excerpt: LocoRoco is a PSP platformer which tasks you with saving some cut blobs of fun (the LocoRoco) from dreadlock-wearing baddies. It's a light-hearted game that should appeal not just to the ‘casual’ and child-friendly audiences that it’s superficially aimed at, but also to the more experienced gamers among you who want a challenging 2D platformer. On the surface, LocoRoco is a rather simple 2D side-scrolling platformer aimed at newcomers to the genre.

EGC GAMES

  • Excerpt: Facts… There’s something that we all agree on: game industry repeats itself. If not always, at least most of the times. Games are being copied and gameplay’s just the same from genre to genre. And when we all think that things are not going to change and that we try pretty much in vain, there comes the big bang! As in the case of Wii, the fresh idea comes from Japan. Only there, where Manga, Sonic and Pokémon were born, could a game like this be made.
  • Pros: Addictive gameplay, excellent music
  • Cons: Repetitive levels, short-lasting

LocoRoco

Defunct Games

  • Summary: While LocoRoco is guilty of being overly upbeat and adorable, it's also guilty of being a solid 2D platformer that is a welcome addition to any PSP library. Tweet This product was submitted by the publisher for review. As a rule, Defunct Games does not review games we spent money on. However, that does not always apply to classic/retro games. This specific product, however, came straight from a PR guy for the purposes of being reviewed!

GamesFirst!

  • Excerpt: Sony has borrowed another good idea and brings forth a quirky Japanese game that is obviously meant to target the Katamari crowd. Yet, the Katamari crowd is not one to be easily swayed by imitators. So how does Loco Roco fare? Rather well, arigato gozaimus. Funky, lovable graphics, super happy fun-time music, and quirky gameplay that's part Super Monkey Ball and part Super Mario Bros. combine to create one of the best games we've ever played, especially on our PSPs.
  • Pros: ups: Amazing art style, catchy music, interesting gameplay that works well.
  • Cons: downs: Not into quirky?

  • Excerpt: , I've been cuted-out. Seriously, it's almost painful, and I can't get this goddamn song out of my head. I close my eyes, and I see a gently rotating world with a little blob of happiness lip synching along to the music in my brain and all I want to do is guide the little guy into that wall because it is all that different from the game that I played half a year ago.

BigPond GameArena

  • Conclusion: The most exciting aspect of the puzzle experience is the simple design. There is almost no loading and levels never take more than a few minutes to traverse and complete. This makes LocoRoco the perfect travelling companion as you're never overly stimulating yourself, straining to see everything on the screen or having to worry about ridiculous load times between train stations or bus stops.
  • Pros: Super easy to play and understand, Great design in levels and controls, Unique visuals, Quick levels and no loading, Plenty of replay value
  • Cons: Presentation may turn people off, Soundtrack can get a bit too cheerful at times
