Kingdom of Paradise

Game Over Online
12 January 2007
  • Excerpt: There’s something about the mix of swordplay and Eastern environments that speaks of a great backdrop for a game. Maybe it’s the fast paced hacking and slashing by skilled swordsmen or going up against numerous opponents at the same time that’s perfect for action titles. Perhaps it’s the undercurrent of magic and channeling chi, or exploring a lush, sprawling countryside that works well for RPGs.

  • Excerpt: Climax, the Japan-based developers of Landstalker, not the UK-based developers of Sudeki, tossed out their first PSP attempt this year with Kingdom of Paradise, titled Tenchi no Mon in Japan. As the first Japanese-styled Action RPG on the platform to hit North America, Kingdom of Paradise didn't have any shoes it needed to fill. Unfortunately, Kingdom of Paradise is an entirely forgettable experience. That's not to say that Kingdom of Paradise is without worth, though.

Playstation Illustrated

  • Excerpt: In its short life span, the PSP has seen a healthy offering of games from every genre except RPGs. While it can certainly be argued that the genre really don't lend itself all that well to portable gaming, there are still die-hards who want a little RPG action on the go. This lack of RPGs makes Kingdom of Paradise a tempting offering for PSP owners craving a portable RPG. Visually, Kingdom of Paradise squeezes everything it can out of the PSP.

The Laser

  • Summary: Kingdom of Paradise for the PSP is a surprisingly deep RPG that allows players to create a great number of attacks. The swordplay system allows you to create your own style of attacks using special moves and potions to increase your skills. The game follows most role-playing conventions otherwise as you traverse a large map of different areas, facing off against dozens of enemies in real-time battles.

  • Conclusion: * This game requires your PSP's firmware to be at least version 2.00. The UMD disc contains an installer for version 2.00.

Kingdom of Paradise

Portable Review
1 December 2005
  • Excerpt: After a fairly long translation period, Kingdom of Paradise has finally made it to the U.S. Considering that nearly a year has passed since the game was realized, one would think that it would be hard pressed to keep up with the second or third wave of PSP games. While there are some signs of aging, it does well to distinguish itself from the rest of the crowd. Had KoP been a launch title, it would have been received with much greater acclaim.

  • Conclusion: While Kingdom of Paradise didn’t quite live up to the hype it had received, it is indeed an enjoyable experience. It has got some issues that need to be fixed up if a sequel is ever planed. For PSP players that are hungry for an action RPG with a quality story, amazingly detailed game world, and very fun battle system, you need look no further. Kingdom of Paradise will entertain for hours; it just takes a little getting used to.
