Excerpt: It seems that it is that time of year again. It is the time when every Hollywood summer blockbuster receives a sub-par videogame tie-in. This time it is Hellboy: The Science of Evil and fortunately, it isn't a direct translation of the new Hellboy movie, but instead it tells a side story to enhance the Hellboy mythology. Visually for a PSP game, Hellboy: The Science of Evil actually looks pretty good.
Conclusion: Even with its many problems, Science of Evil manages to be a somewhat entertaining experience. Fans of Hellboy likely won't find this game to be a complete disappointment, although it honestly could have been much better. With its repetitive and sluggish gameplay, fairly short completion time, bad camera, lackluster cinematics, and complete lack of voice work, I would definitely caution eager fans to play the game before purchasing it.
Excerpt: In spite of their simultaneous release, Hellboy: Science of Evil on the PSP has nothing to do with the Hellboy II movie. Science of Evil not only has its own original storyline, it draws upon the comics rather than the movie for its visual style. Sometimes being different is good, but not in this case. Science of Evil should have looked to the latest Hellboy movie (and to games that are actually fun to play) for inspiration.
Conclusion: All in all, Hellboy: Science of Evil is a pretty intolerable game. Perhaps I am most upset because I feel personally let down as a fan of the series. But I can't see anyone getting any substantial pleasure out of this title, be they fan or not. But since the majority of people who are looking to pick this one up are fans, I would advise those people to stay away from this title, as it is an extreme let-down.
Excerpt: With several games based on summer movies already on store shelves, one must wonder just what chance yet another similar title has. Oddly enough, Hellboy: Science of Evil isn’t exactly a video game based on a movie, but rather, a unique entry into the Hellboy universe. Does it distinguish itself enough from the film? Though Science of Evil released alongside a new Hellboy film, the two actually share very little in common in terms of their narrative.
