Crimson Gem Saga

Crimson Gem Saga is a role-playing PSP game developed for the PlayStation Portable in by Matrix Software (Japan) and published by Atlus USA. The game takes premises in the world of Latein. It follows the adventures of Killian von Rohcoff, who has a penchant for being at the wrong end of fate. Killian is now caught up in the battle for an artifact known as the Crimson Gem. The gameplay in Crimson Gem Saga is similar to turn-based RPGs, with a few extra twist in the foray. This includes an ambush system where contact between the player’s icon and a generic monster icon on a field map will trigger a battle. If the player manages to sneak up on the monster (ie, the monster has its back towards player), the player will gain immediate preliminary attack with the combined force of all party members. If the monster is aware of the player’s presence (denoted with a "!" symbol above their head), the monster gains a preemptive attack on the player with the combined force of all the enemy party members. Players can also customize their weapons and skills, and combine attacks that include powers from up to 4 party member. The game has an ESRB: T (Teen) rating for Blood, Fantasy Violence, Mild Language, Mild Suggestive Themes, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco.

Features

Crimson Gem Saga requires players to master the Critical Combo System to deliver multiple hits and damage to an enemy. Players can team up with Allies to unleash massive dual, triple or all-team attacks and the game also features detailed character and sprites. The game showcases hand-drawn visuals on 2-D artwork. The game features 8 main characters where the player (as Killian) can interact with. They include Acelora (a Radiant Crusader that serve the Order of Light), Spinel (an elf, and a self-described "treasure hunter extraordinaire". This character interacts with Killian at the beginning of the game), Herbert con Guterrian (Killian’s rival from the days of Green Hill Academy. Is an arrogant character with a unique laugh and is always up to beating Killian at everything), Henson (mysterious, wise-cracking mage who is quick with an insult and a burning fireball), Jeffrey (the only character who has even worse luck than Killian. He first runs into Killian while in the middle of a dispute with Spinel), Lahduk and Gelts (is a former priest who has renounced his old ways).

Crimson Gem Saga should be on every PSP-owning RPG fans’ radar. However, it may not be for everyone. You need to have patience and dedication if you want to get the most out of this game. If the very thought of level grinding makes you shudder, try looking elsewhere. If you are willing to invest time in it, then really go all out. Spend whole evenings or afternoons playing. Explore everywhere, battle countless enemies and see everything. Trust me, it’s worth it. Read... Read more

by Amanda L. Kondolojy As the video game medium increases in age, it seems that more and more people are beginning to appreciate the value of retro-inspired titles. Last year’s Mega Man 9 was definitely proof of this, and it’s easy to see why these older-stylized games are popular. They were more difficult, generally much longer, and had a deeper focus on gameplay over visuals. Of course, that’s not to say that modern games are all bad, but playing these... Read more

Even if you choose to ignore optional side quests, playing through the main story should take you around 40 hours. Regrettably, much of that time is wasted on grinding, running in circles, or completing dull fetch quests. There's also some backtracking, but not so much that it gets annoying. Of greater concern is the game's failure to stand out from the crowd or immerse you into the gameplay. Crimson Gem Saga is initially satisfying as a lighthearted role-playing game,... Read more

It doesn’t particularly offer anything new to the PSP, but Crimson Gem Saga is still a respectable RPG for the system. The battle system should be enough to keep you playing as the rewards are plentiful after every victory and it’s not hard to level up your characters. In short, CGS is a lot like its own hero, Killian - stuck in second place between mediocrity and exceptional. Read more

Recently the discussion of innovation versus presentation has been popping up. Specifically, how should a critic view a game that makes no attempt at breaking new ground, but instead focuses on delivering a very polished and playable experience? Of course, the answer depends on the critic and what their personal philosophy is composed of. It really couldn't be any other way, could it? That said, it has to be taken into account that the games industry is a large one, and... Read more

The game is a worthy RPG for your psp. It's a turn-based JRPG game. The formula seems well old and done before, but it's fresh seeing this type of game on the psp!! IronNos did a GOOD job on it. Also looks like a low budget game, but again IronNos did a GOOD job making it presentable... The artwork is beautiful.. it's a great adventure on the psp. Recommend this over class of heroes or any RPG out now. GO grab it!!! Read more
