Summary: ClaDun, as the title suggests, is an RPG. More specifically it is a dungeon crawling retro-inspired action RPG from NIS America. An awesome one. ClaDun is all about the dungeon crawling. Think of it as a fusion of a Zelda-like RPG with a Rogue-like dungeon crawler. Mix in some portable-friendly, bite-sized gameplay, add a few pinches of customization and cover it with a deliciously retro sauce and you have a winner of a game.
Pros: + Retro feel, modern appeal., + Deep, customizable “Magic Circle” party system., + Minimal but amusing story.
Excerpt: Cladun: This is an RPG! is the latest entry in the growing line-up of retro-homage parody games. Like 3D Dot Game Heroes or Retro Game Challenge , Cladun takes genre conventions (in this case, RPGs) and treats then with equal parts homage and outright parody. Cladun manages to look great and not so great at the same time. Following other retro-styled games, Cladun uses throwback, sprite-based visuals similar to what you'd expect to see in 16-bit era games.
Excerpt: About a month ago, I'd never heard of it. Like many wonderful games coming out this month, it was overshadowed by Halo: Reach , Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood and Metroid: Other M . So when it was offered, I reverted to a Google search, routing around the massive search engine with the keywords "Cladun" and "RPG". Of course, I was bound to find it as it's right there in a title: Cladun: This is an RPG . A tad silly, I thought, but watched the video none-the-less.
Conclusion: Cladun: This is an RPG was a pleasant surprise. Feeling like it was designed especially for veterans of the genre, it's comfortably (and delightfully) uninterested in converting skeptics. Not only are the loot collecting and dungeon crawling hooks firmly in place, they're supported with incredibly competent mechanics, a ton of pre-packed dungeons, and one of the best random dungeon implementations around.
