Worked Great For a Week

Justin P., Newegg
8 January 2014
  • Pros: Clear Picture
  • Cons: The fans never spun correctly and would randomly stop spinning at all. So the unit overheated and shutdown all the time. RMA'ed it back to newegg. We'll see how the new one does when it arrives.

Very disapointed

Jorge A Castillo, Amazon
11 August 2013
  • Summary: After 3 months using it I'm very disapointed, I bought this projector because the Optoma HD20 jumped $ 300,00 in two weeks, I used to have an Optoma HD70 wich was HD720p and I'm 100% sure that this old model has crispier images and better color output, even though the VS PRO8200 is 1080p.

Decent Projector, Iffy Quality, Horrible Service

Michael N., Newegg
27 March 2013
  • Summary: I researched projectors for months before settling on this unit. I saw no indications from reviews here and at avsforum that this model had any issues like I've experienced. I really hope that this is a freak occurrence, as I don't have the patience to deal with ViewSonic support again.
  • Pros: This projector has decent reviews and specs for its price point. I did a lot of research before selecting it, and I was initially happy with it. Great out-of-box calibration, colors were very accurate. The thing is a light cannon, easily watchable in daylight. 1080P content looks great at 104".
  • Cons: It's noisy. This is my first HT projector, so maybe i'm expecting too much, but the cooling fan is easily audible at reasonable listening volumes. The issue is exacerbated due to the unit being mounted directly overhead in my installation. All the other 'cons' I was expecting after reading reviews and spec sheets. No show-stoppers. Then... One evening last month (PJ was ~4 months old at this point, 50 lamp hours), I powered on the projector, and nothing happened. The ...

HDMI 1 Audio Dies

Chris N., Newegg
23 March 2013
  • Summary: I liked having 2 HDMI ports, it's not nice to only have one that fully works.
  • Pros: Everything else works.
  • Cons: The HDMI audio has blown out, extensive testing proves it's just that port. There's an hdmi 2 but this is really annoying.

Does Not Display Shadow Detail

B. Ellis, Amazon
16 January 2013
  • Summary: I got this projector to replace an older Mitsubishi in a home theater setup and move up to 1080p. My initial impression was wow, what a beautiful bright picture. This is true for sports or bright scenes. It is truly a light cannon. When watching movies that have dark scenes the shadow detail is totally black. I tried everything to calibrate the settings from these reviews and also Projector Reviews [...] with zero luck. Nothing made a difference.

Really, really dark

FPGAEngineer, Amazon
7 January 2013
  • Summary: I am baffled what is going on with this projector. I can run all sorts of calibration images from my laptop and set it up so I see every shade of gray and other colors. It's super bright, and the color are vibrant. Every synthetic test pattern looks awesome. And then, I play a DVD and shadow areas are completely black. Not just a little dark, they are black.

Broke in under 1 month

John B., Newegg
5 January 2013
  • Summary: Hopefully this is just a fluke as modt reviews Ive read claim to be between 1,000 and 2,000 hours with no problems so far. Hopefully Viewsonics bad warranty servicing reputation is highly exaggerated. I really do like the projector and find a lot of the negatives people have stated about it to be perfectly acceptable. I use this as a home theater unit in a room with two 8 foot sliding glass doors and one 6 foot sliding glass door.
  • Pros: Delivers as advertised. Great color, great image. No complaints in the performance department. Fan is a little loud, but its not too much of a distraction. After watching a movie after less than a month of ownership, I heard a pop and projector now will not light up. After reading some reviews and complaints it looks like its probably either a bulb or motherboard issue. After reading same reviews, I am now dreading the Viewsonic RMA process. I know there are lemons ou...
  • Cons: Broke after less than 1 month of ownership. I had read quite a lot about this projector and had set the quick power on and shut off to off which is recommended for longer life. Also ran it in eco mode and high altitude mode (I'm at 5000 ft.). There shiuld be no reason this went out this fast.

Great for Sports not good for Movies with lots of Dark Scenes

Clint Carter, Amazon
25 July 2012
  • Summary: This is the first projector I have ever purchased. I did a lot of research and I did see that people were saying that this projector's blacks were not the best. However, there were no REALLY bad reviews. Many people loved the projector and it does have DarkChip3 technology. The final selling point was the price. It was about $300 less than the next step up.

Bright, but soft

Kaylon C., Newegg
16 July 2012
  • Summary: I've contacted viewsonic a few times about some of these issues, mostly firmware issues, and they have been unresponsive or unprofessional to inquiries. A year ago, I was promised a firmware update was coming to fix some of the issues, but one has never been released.
  • Pros: Bright, decent color selection for correcting color. Works well in bright rooms, and has some great built in and user customizable functions to take advantage of ambient room brightness. Lightweight, and comes with a fairly decent carrying case.
  • Cons: Very soft image, especially at 1080p. Even with a silver matte screen, and perfect focusing, the image doesn't stand out at all compared to your standard 720p projector. If you need quality and sharpness, look elsewhere. As a comparison, the text of this review is hardly readable on an 80" screen from 9' away. Projects High. Even with the limited read legs (which are also the only angle correction in this unit) it's hard to get the image to project straight out. On my...

Not so fun

Randall B., Newegg
17 May 2012
  • Pros: Image quality is good, good value
  • Cons: I purchased from newegg on 1/17/12 and on 5/15/12 it just stopped working. I purchased a replacement lamp, but it would simply not fire up. I have contacted Viewsonic customer service, attempted to newegg to RMA this unit without luck. Still sitting in a dark room w/o any video.
