Sony VPL-VW90ES

CNET
19 April 2014
  • Summary: Sony's first 3D projector is a high-end treat. The SXRD light engine is as sharp as a sushi knife, and we didn't spot any picture-spoiling 3D crosstalk effects. If you really want to watch 3D movies at home, you need to buy one of these.
  • Cons: Fan noise is higher than on previous models;. The 3D tech adds a significant price premium;. Projector is on the largish side.

  • Conclusion: It ain’t cheap, but if you want 3D pictures writ huge in your home this is the gadget to do it.
  • Pros: The VPL-VW90ES is an evolution of Sony’s previous home cinema projector, adding a wealth of minor improvements and one major new feature: 3D. And it’s glorious: 3D movies look bright, sharp and free from the crosstalk-induced ghosting that afflicts most LCD 3D TVs. Add to that the fact that you can have them plastered over your wall at 100 inches plus, and you’ve got a killer product. It’s fantastic as a 2D projector too, with punchy contrast and vivid colours bringin...
  • Cons: As with televisions, the 3D compatibility of the VPL-VW90ES adds a significant premium to the price – it’s an expensive product, even by home cinema projectors standards. There are minor issues worthy of consideration too: the unit itself is very large, and there’s a fair bit of fan noise belting out of it when it’s doing its thing – enough to be distracting during quieter movie scenes.

  • Conclusion: OK, let’s see what we’ve got here. The Sony VPL-VW90ES is their flagship home theater projector, and their first 1080p projector sporting 3D. It commands a $9999 list price. That’s a lot of loose change, but the least expensive serious1080p home theater projector with 3D is the Sharp, and that guy’s almost exactly half the price. “Out of the box” color needs some work, not impressed, but I am impressed with the final picture after Mike did his calibration.
  • Pros: Excellent color, and overall picture quality, post calibration, Really good black levels, but not the best, Above average brightness in “best” movie mode, Very good dark shadow detail, 2D to 3D conversion – interesting, 3D can be played as 2D, Dynamic iris action is smooth generally invisible- a real plus, Zoom, Focus, Lens shift, are all motorized, Wide variety of gamma and color presets, Very nice menu layout, Very good documentation (a rarity), Excellent remote con...

  • Summary: Sony's new projector has been built from the ground up with 3D in mind. But that's not enough to impress us.
  • Pros: Excellent build quality, Superb 2D performance, Runs very quietly
  • Cons: Crosstalk with 3D, Lack of brightness with 3D, Looks very expensive vs JVC's X3

Sony VPL-VW90ES review

homecinemachoice.com
11 March 2011
  • Excerpt: Many TV addicts are sceptical of domestic 3D. There’s just not enough content available to compensate for the general inconvenience of having to wear special glasses, particularly if you like to multitask. Surfing on a laptop or snarfing custard creams are both devilishly difficult to achieve from behind Active Shutter lenses. But take 3D out of the living room and place it in a dedicated home cinema and it becomes a proposition that will make you rethink your views.
  • Pros: Terrific 2D performance; low operational noise; extensive user control; deep immersive 3D

What Hi-Fi?
3 March 2011
  • Excerpt: For our money, the ultimate home cinema experience has to have a projector at its heart. We've seen some superb TVs in our time, from Kuros to Bravias – and some terrifyingly huge TVs, too – but nothing can quite match a home cinema projector, a screen and a darkened room for recreating the cinema experience in your own living room.
  • Pros: Motorised lens makes set-up easy, fully specified, Full HD 3D projector, best 3D picture we’ve seen, looks good in 2D, too
  • Cons: Not entirely flawless, 2D performance can be bettered for the money
