JVC's $3,500 projector looks like a million bucks

22 July 2013
  • Summary: The relatively affordable JVC DLA-X35 produces videophile-grade images with very few compromises.
  • Pros: JVC's DLA-X35 doles out huge, stunning projection images characterized by deep black levels and highly accurate color; excellent value for this level of image quality; extensive picture adjustments and setup options, including power zoom, focus, and lens shift; no-nonsense minimalist design; optional 3D emitter compatible with cheaper third-party glasses.
  • Cons: Inaccurate pre-calibration picture settings; doesn't include accessories necessary to watch 3D; inferior to many projectors in brighter environments.

JVC DLA-X35 Projector Review

Projector reviews
3 March 2013
  • Conclusion: The JVC DLA-X35, and its Pro side twin, the RS46U, are the brightest of their respective JVC projector line-ups. The thing is, the DLA-X35 (and therefore also the RS46U) are not overly bright, and are likely to struggle in many “family room” type environments. In other words, a fine projector, but “not the brightest bulb in the room”. For challenging “non caves” there are other excellent projectors out there that are 50%, brighter, twice as bright, and even a bit more.
  • Pros: Very respectable color post calibration, Great black level performance for the price (and no dynamic iris needed), Good CFI – multiple modes, Slightly bove average brightness in “best” movie mode (703 lumens) for movie viewing, Very good dark shadow detail, expecially considering the dark blacks, 2D->3D works – try it with some of your 2D videos from your camcorder or…, Lens Memory – allows movie fans to go with a widescreen – such as 2.35:1 cinemascope, Zoom, Focus, ...
  • Cons: Just below average in “brightest mode” (measured almost 1000 lumens), Needs to be brighter for 3D – stick to smaller screens or high gain ones, Color, post calibration isn’t quite as accurate as competitors with better calibration controls, or JVC’s higher end projectors with more color controls, Lacks a standard analog computer input (there are work-arounds), A 3rd HDMI input would be nice (always), but in this case, more so, since there is no standard analog compute...

We Three Projectors: Sony VPL-50WES, Epson 5020e, JVC-DLA-X35

Sound & Vision Magazine
6 February 2013
  • Excerpt: Winter is my favorite season, when all the past year’s new flat-panel TVs have been reviewed and I can switch my attention to projectors. This season was particularly bountiful, as I was able to score three of the best projectors on the market for review. Sony’s VPL-HW50ES, plus an Epson and a JVC, all arrived on my doorstep within a few days of one another. Not too shabby, that. Time for a roundup.

24 July 2013
