Summary: Personal Experience This is my first home theater projector. I did a lot of research before getting this three years ago. I purchased it used with only 110hrs. on the bulb. I have already gone through one bulb with around 2000 hrs. in eco mode, but I have problems where I live with the power reliability, so I know that didn't help with bulb life.
Summary: Personal Experience Bought this projector about 1 1/2 years ago and still love it. Purchased it back then for $750 and I cannot believe the quality I got for my money. We are using it on a 122" screen in our home theater and have ~800 hours on it. Never have had any problems at all. Cleaned the dust filter once (it tells you when to do this) and that was it. We have watched Blue-Ray flicks on it as well and it is amazing.
Summary: This projector seems to be really good value for money. I've read a lot of reviews, many critical of the black levels, but I don't think they are a problem because realistically you need a darkened room anyway.
Pros: Great picture. The colour is a bit over the top, and using calibration software indicates the balances aren't perfect, but to my eye the out of the box configuration is great. I just fired it up and was impressed.
Cons: The zoom ratio isn't great. I am able to get the right size to suit my screen, but I'd be happier if there was more zoom so that when watching a 4:3 image I could zoom out to fill up my whole screen.
Summary: Comments about BenQ W500 Home Cinema Projector: This projector made a great family gift this holiday season. I bought it a few months ago and then had a huge box of family pictures put on film and gave it to my grandmother for Christmas. The display is very clear. What I thought was cool was that you can hook it up to almost anything, VCR, DVD Player, Camcorder, it really is user-friendly and very easy to operate.
Pros: Easy To Setup, Easy to use, Great picture quality, Reliable Performance, Small Footprint
Summary: Comments about BenQ W500 Home Cinema Projector: After hurricane Ike we connected one of these to a generator and displayed movies on a garage for all the neighbors. The picture was bright even in the early evening. The only complaint, and why this is 4 rather than 5 stars, is that the sound is a little weak, we used additional speakers on an amp.
Pros: Easy To Setup, Easy to use, Great picture quality, Small Footprint
Summary: Personal Experience This was my first HD pj. I think it looks awesome. HD dvd looks great, also dish HD like Discovery looks like you can walk right into the wall. Love the lens shift Problems Well my problems started from day one and i didnt even know it. I had floating red pixels around faces and similar color objects. I did not know it was the pj at first, i thought i was the $20 dvd player i had.
Summary: Once I decided to go with an LCD projector it was between the VPL-AW15 and this BenQ W500. After many hours reading reviews from projectorreviews and on the AVSforum, I decided on the BenQ. I couldn't be happier with my decision. It performs exactly as I hoped it would. My hookup consists of an Xbox 360 Elite and HD cable receiver connected through an Onkyo 7.1 surround system which also acts as an HDMI passthrough to the projector.
Summary: HAVE HAD BENQ W5OO FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS NOW. JUST OVER 200 HRS ON PROJECTOR. IMAGE IS FANTASTIC WITH HD DVD AND BLUE RAY. STANDARD DVD IS VERY GOOD. SAT TV IS CLEAN COMMING FROM COMPONENT INPUT. SVHS NOT SO GOOD.
Pros: LOOKS GREAT WITH BLUE RAY. SAT TV OK. BLACK LEVEL OK. VERY EASY TO INSTALL. CHEAP TO RUN AND BUY.
Cons: IRIS CAN BE SEEN IN OPERATION. BLUE SPOTS CAN BE SEEN SOMETIMES.
Summary: Personal Experience Well I just bought this projo for 800 bucks from Costco and let me tell you...I love it! Really good price and excellent picture quality for 720p. I was intending on going 1080p but this was such an excellent price that I had to try it out first..but i'm keeping it for sure. Maybe i'll get 1080 in a few years. The picture needs some fine tuning out of the box and I would recommend using HDMI with blu-ray.
Summary: Personal Experience Overall good projector. image was very nice, standard def was ok but not what i expected. Unfortunately had to return it, sounded like there was a generator in my basement whenever i watched a movie, MAN is the fan on this projector loud. If the level of noise the fan makes does not bother you, for the money you can't go wrong.
