BenQ's short-throw W1080ST projector a decent buy

CNET
12 March 2014
  • Summary: The BenQ W1080ST short-throw DLP projector offers very good performance and extra placement flexibility, but the long-throw W1070 is a better deal.
  • Pros: The BenQ W1080ST DLP projector offers a very good image for the price with relatively deep blacks and faithful color; short throw allows placement close to the screen, on a coffee table for example; onboard speaker; decent 3D performance.
  • Cons: Limited setup options with no manual lens shift; old 3D system; no 3D glasses in package and cost $99 extra.

BenQ W1080ST

  • Conclusion: If you've often dreamed of big screen action but thought your room was too small to accommodate such pleasures, the BenQ W1080ST could well be the answer to your prayers. This small and attractively priced projector can deliver big images from only a few feet away and, as long as you're careful, it's easy to setup. The remote control is annoyingly small but at least the menu system is simple to navigate and there's a decent set of connections at the rear.
  • Pros: Excellent greyscale performance, Impressive motion handling, Decent video processing, Great 3D performance, Useful if space is limited, Bright images, Price
  • Cons: Mediocre Blacks, Limited shadow detail, Rainbow artefacts, Fans and colour wheel are noisy, No lens shift

Expert Review

  • Conclusion: BenQ has crafted a versatile projector that's capable of beaming almost anything you can hook up at a short range, and at a high quality too. If you get excited for movie nights at home, the W1080ST could be the perfect addition to watching your favourite flicks, and it works great for gaming too. You get plenty of bang for your buck for £850, although that price could go up and up if you lack speakers and you're itching for 3D.
  • Pros: BenQ's no stranger to making projectors, as we came away impressed with its compact and similarly short-throw GP10 , but it was limited in resolution and speed. The W1080ST takes the short range of its smaller sibling, but you're treated to a full 1080p resolution to play with, along with plenty of connectivity options to hook up almost anything you've got in your entertainment centre. Along with two HDMI ports, you've also got VGA, composite, S-Video, and component c...
  • Cons: While the W1080ST excels at its main priority, BenQ has also stuffed in a 10W speaker to try and offer you the complete cinema package. The speaker is simply terrible, though, giving hardly any clarity and tinny sound that is best avoided. The projector does offer an audio-out port for hooking up your own speakers, making it easy to get access to better sound, but that does up the costs, especially if you don't already own a decent set of speakers. BenQ has packed in ...
