Good quality - just a shame about the new toner cost!
25 February 2013
Summary: I bought this printer originally around three years ago, and use it to print off a lot of essays and documents for my studies. The printer seems to me to be excellent in terms of quality. The 'introductory' toner cartridge has so far lasted me three years and has only just run out! The only shame about the product is that a new, authentic toner cartridge from Samsung is actually only £10 cheaper than buying the printer itself complete with the original toner which seems...
Excerpt: As a student, I rely on having a good printer as I often need to print out my essays, notes, lecture slides, articles etc. I have been staying at my parents' house this academic year, so I have had a lot of chance to put their printer to the test. My parents also use the printer very heavily as they are self-employed and working from home, having to print a large amount of customer order details per day.
Pros: Quite quick, clear printing, easy to use, withstands heavy usage
Cons: Loud, bulky, some issues with paper jams and picking up too many sheets of paper
Summary: I've been using this printer for half a year and it never gave me any trouble. Setup in Windows 7 is easy, print quality is good, double-sided printing is a manual but easy process (driver pops up a message on your screen telling you how to put the paper back in). Never had a paper jam either, which was a real annoyance with some printers I've used before. Definitely worth choosing this over an ink printer, as long as you don't need colour prints.
If you don't print a ton a month - this one is for you

Excerpt: Caution: Out of the box its toner cartridge came wrapped in black plastic and is already inserted properly into the laser printer. You need to remove the plastic wrap and re-insert the cartridge. The printed and CD manual was kinda' vague about it. I almost turned it ON right out of the box. That aside, this laser printer really looks good on top of a table.
Pros: Good black and white laser printer and very simple to use
Cons: may not be for real heavy duty use like hundreds of pages everyday .
Summary: I bought this printer from Tesco at what seemed to be a great price. The printer did the job and when the ink/toner finished I discovered, with amazement and great disappointment, that a new replacement cartridge was almost as expensive as the printer itself! And to top it all, the cartridges are fixed so it is not easy to re-use them.
Nice printer, shame about the chip in the toner cartridge.

Summary: Have you wondered why the ML 1640 printer is so cheap? The reason is that they force you to buy their highly expensive toner cartridges. These cartridges are fitted with unnecessary chips which count the number of pages you have printed and then, when you reach an arbitrary limit they stop you from printing any more. This happens unexpectedly and can be very expensive and frustrating - as I have found to my cost.
Great so far, but buy a cartridge & usb cable with it

Summary: My wife and I bought this printer as we are both aspiring grad students and have to print lots of articles and our own writing. Here are a few points on our experience: 1) We went through the 'introductory' toner quickly, and it reached fewer than 500 pages (one 500 sheet pack of paper).
