Do not buy!! low yield toner, will not let you print when one is empty.
2 October 2013
Summary: The quality of print for this printer is very good however; the yield for the toner cartridges is very low. My page count right now is 360. I replaced the black cartridge already two weeks ago. My Magenta is now out and this printer will not print at all because of the "88 Replace Magenta" error even though the black is full. You can't even access any of the printer menus. I just flashes red until you pay for a new cartridge.
Summary: I will never buy another Lexmark printer. Here are the issues I had with this printer: 1) The printer drivers (at least for Mac) did not allow you to print in grayscale or black or white - forcing you to use the color toner 2) The toner does not last anywhere near what it should. We could get 1 to 2 ream of paper before the toner needed to be replaced 3) The printer doesn't allow you to use all of the toner. It seems to just estimate when the toner is out.
WORST PRINTER EVER Lexmark C540N Color Laser Printer
29 August 2012
Summary: Let me start by saying I believe there is a problem with the entire line of Lexmark C540. I have personally gone through 5 different Lexmark C540 each one had a different problem with printing that was related to the some component that controls the way the image is affixed, each I would start receiving prints with inconsistent image quality. The first failed after a few months, the replacement a few days and so on each lasted a few days.
Summary: I got this printer and printed about 600 pages with it, just text and a few diagrams in color. When the color toner runs out, which happens VERY quickly, you CANNOT PRINT IN BLACK AND WHITE. Unless you purchase an overpriced cartridge and replace that one color that's out, the printer won't print, at all! And 2000 pages is a LIE. You'll get 600-800 pages before you need another toner cartridge. I'll NEVER buy a Lexmark printer again!
Summary: I purchased the Lexmark C540N to replace a Samsung color laser that I wanted to smash to smithereens out of frustration (constant paper jams) and I was really happy at first with the Lexmark. The first bad omen was when it wouldn't print because it kept saying the waste toner receptacle was full - after printing only 20 pages. I contacted tech support and they shipped me a new receptacle which worked fine.
Summary: The printer came with only a power cord. When prompted by the installation CD to connect the printer to the computer, I realized I was not given the cable. I called customer service and they informed me that they do not include the cord with the printer. This cord is necessary for installing the printer, whether you are using it wirelessly or not! I had to buy one for $25!!! Recommend checking that a printer comes with all required parts before buying.
Toner cartridges don't last and cost more than the printer.

Summary: Lexmark claims the High Yield Toner Cartridge has a 2,000 page yield, but I have not seen anything close to that, my experience is less than 500. I got the printer in 4/2010, and according to the printer I have printed 912 pages, but I have replaced the Black twice, once a low yield, and once 2.5k yield. I have replaced all color cartridges, and now need to replace Magenta again. I'm on Mac OS 10.6 and have a Windows 7 box.
Summary: As a printer this one's about as dependable as all the rest, however it costs a fortune in ink. With cartridges running between $50 and $80 and the frequency in which you have to replace them, you'd be better off having your documents printed at Kinkos or Staples. Seriously... the low toner indicater light is on almost constantly. It's just another "low cost printer/expensive ink" ripoff. What a disappointment!
