Summary: I know they are older and discontinued. However, for a low to mid volume printer, these things are workhorses. They happily take double their rated volume and work without fail. Unfortunately, they are getting harder and harder to find. They are also not easy to work on beyond replacing some basic parts. Luckily, they very rarely fail. Please note you are buying a used or refurbished printer here. There is a difference between used and refurbished.
Summary: We have used this particular printer for several years. The print quality is pretty good and the speed is very good. I had two toners that had been opened by mistake that were unused so rather than upgrade I chose to buy this older model. These older model HP's I think are better made than the newer ones anyway.
Summary: Have used these professionally in business manufacturing environment as well as currently in my home office. This is a very fast, quiet and reliable black & white laser printer. Easily networkable using a PC as a print server or using a dedicated print server directly through a router (just assign a dedicated IP address and let it rip). Accessories are inexpensive and readily available from Amazon, eBay and other online sources.
Summary: Beware when the rollers melt in this printer, get prepared to buy a new one because it can't be fixed unless by Hewlett Packard. The problem with these printers as I said before is that this product has a defect. My 540 HP printer still works after 11 years. In that printer, I have used paper that is 20 years old, stapled, and used before without any problem. If it jams, I can always pull it out without permanently damaging this printer.
Summary: Purchased this laser printer (with network card) for our home, not business, in 2003. A networked laser printer makes printer sharing much easier than using Windows Print Sharing. We've used it on a nearly daily basis, a couple of pages/day, and we're still on the first toner. Printing speed is great, and we have experienced no problems with the printer. We haven't found a need for upgrading the memory or paper tray capacity.
Excerpt: We have a few printers in work, this one isn't large enough to support the number of people printing to it, so it is used as an overflow for printing on letterhead, bypassing the queue when you're in a hurry, and printing confidential things to avoid them getting mixed up with the other jobs on the main printer.

Pros: Decent quality prints, fast performing, easy to use, affordable
Excerpt: The HP 1300n is bar far an exceptional printer (Even though only in black and white). I have had one for a while now they are rugged and last for a long time, The printer I recommend to people who have or are about to set up a home office or business, Most of the latest office printers out now in places like Staples have fax, scanner, photocopier and printer all in one I would advise that people try not to buy printers like this the first reason being if your printer...
Excerpt: We use the 1300n networked to serve seven computers. It is very quick and quiet and is also quite compact, so it does not intrude on office space. The print quality is good - but not noticably higher than that of any immediate competition. The main drawback is the cost of the ink. In the space of one year we have exceeded the price we paid for the printer in the price for the ink. Our office downstairs uses the HP 1200.
