Not great on OS X, toner doesn’t last

Dominik Hoffmann, Amazon
13 June 2014
  • Summary: PROS: The print quality is very good. CONS: When I purchased this printer it seemed like a good deal. Now that I have used for over a year, it becomes clear that this printer suffers from a few problems. 1. Toner cartridges don't last but also are not cheap. 2. Many features like printing to other than standard media don’t work in Photoshop or Illustrator on OS X Mavericks. Printing to a label has required me to save the document to a PDF file and print it from Preview.

Ink management deceptive

bookhoarder "Jeff", Amazon
3 May 2014
  • Summary: This printer has been installed for about 9 months and works fine. Except. About 3 months ago an alert came up that black ink was low and to order a replacement cartridge. Then a few weeks later said it was very low, less than 50 copies left. I bought a replacement cartridge but decided to just see how long until it ran dry. 2 months later and it hasn't yet. With hundreds of pages of b/w printed since then. Now the Magenta is giving same warning.

Cheap printer with negatives

Dominik H., Newegg
25 March 2014
  • Pros: Low price. Duplexes.
  • Cons: Toner cartridge capacity pretty low. Doesn’t know, when the toner is really out, like me previous HP printer. Doesn’t play so well with OS X. Illustrator and Acrobat can’t print from the multi-purpose tray.

This is not an Enterprise 400 printer! It is a Pro 400 printer & the list prices for these HP printers are ficticious.

Phillip Bernard, Amazon
14 December 2013
  • Summary: If you hover over the lower right hand corner of the picture you will see that is what the picture is labeled. It does not list for $637 but $499 at the HP site reduced to $350 with free shipping. HP says that Enterprise printers have a higher number of duty cycles but I could not find a Enterprise 400 M451dn at their site. Come on Amazon, you can do better than this.

fair for the price

Harvey the Rabbit, Staples
14 November 2013
  • Excerpt: Great easy setup on a wired network. Just played it into my router followed the instructions had it working on 2 computers in a few minutes. Saved time set them both up at the same time.A little slow in printing but overall not a bad printer. Software is a bit intrusive, asking you if it can monitor that you are using genuine hp toner, let them mind their own business.
  • Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, Great Easy Setup Working, Sharp tones & colors
  • Cons: Can't Set For Black Only, Default Settings Lousy, Slow Print Time

1o hours to get it working!

Greg the appraiser, Staples
10 October 2013
  • Excerpt: 7 hours of my time and 3 hours of IT time to get it set up. Had to buy a $65 router to make it work. HP knows there is a problem but hasn't fixed it.
  • Pros: Fast Print Time, Sharp tones & colors

Great printer, but invasive software

Joanna Ward "me", Amazon
23 September 2012
  • Summary: I bought this printer a week ago, and so far I think highly of it, especially the duplex printing feature. However, I am very disappointed with HPs invasive software for detecting authentic cartridges. Google "HP print cartridge authentication" to learn more. They do a good job of selling the benefits, but after some additional searching, it's easy to see that a number of people have had unintended consequences--nothing earth shattering, but annoying time wasters...
