Good hardware. Very poor software

Summary: I have used HP printers since the early days (Laserjet III) and generally liked the hardware. As with other printers, this one has good reliable hardware. The problem is the software. HP has decided that the printer setup software will be automatically installed from the printer itself. You plugin the printer, turn on the power, and it starts up the Install program on the PC by copying over the files from a ROM in the printer.
Summary: Given all the positive reviews, it looks like mine may be the exception. When it prints, the printer does a nice job. That said, this one continually jams printing normal documents from the default tray. I've tried using tray 1 as well with the same results. To give you an idea, I just tried to print 3 separate pdfs. Two of the three jammed and needed to be reprinted. Another issue came up first thing today. Somehow, it appears that the software uninstalled itself.
Excerpt: Just purchased one week ago, internals started to make crunching sounds...and then toner poured out through the machine. Probably printed 60 pages. Hopefully Staples provides customer support with this junker.
Summary: So far I can't get the HP Laserjet Pro 400 color 451dn to print legal size paper. I've tried downloading new software upgrades and firmware but the problem persists. I us an iMac with Mountain Lion and perhaps that may be the problem but there are no resolutions or forums online that have given me an answer...
Summary: ONLY get this printer if you are going to use it USB. When we moved it to a network printer we have been having error messages of all kinds. Just to name a few, we had to: -Create a static IP, which subsequently got an error message -Change the IP address, and reconfigure on all computers in the office. -"Downloading from Web" error, no idea what happened there, but appears to have temporarily fixed itself.
Excerpt: ONLY get this printer if you are going to use it USB. When we moved it to a network printer we have been having error messages of all kinds. This printer is incredibly SLOW for pdf files over the network. After MANY MANY calls with customer service I had to install a different driver which might work for now, but we have had many issues of various kinds. HP does not stand behind their product and refuses to take it back.
Impossible installation, drivers & technical support
Charles Johnson, Amazon

Summary: If your goal is to have a Network printer, you better have an MIS department. Every computer needs individual downloads and installs for drivers to the C Drive (not the network -- get it -- network printer does not install over a network) and every one is a different problem and no instructions whatsover and the technical support absolutely 100% stinks. They do not even understand unzipping driver files.
Summary: This is why you purchase through Amazon. Printer arrived on-time. Unfortunately, after properly installing the printer, the printer's demo page was coming out perfect on half the page but the other half looked like the printer had run-out of ink. After confirming that the installed driver was correct and the most recent version, I printed 3 more demo pages - same problem every time. So, it was back in the box and ready for return.
