Good enough to buy again - That speaks as well as anything for a product

Summary: I owned this printer before this particular item came up on eBay but as it was used heavily - it eventually needed some repairs that I didn't want to make so I purchased this very slightly used printer on eBay to replace the one I had & liked so much. Prior to this item coming up on eBay & knowing I would have to replace my dying printer, I purchased another Canon printer on eBay (an even more expensive model) that ended up with fewer features than what I already had.
This is an outstanding printer.Eight color cartridges.

Summary: I have used the Canon printers including the i960, the pixma i6000, the i9900 as well as this iP8500 and all of them do a superb job. I print lots of photos and find the very inexpensive compatible ink cartridges to work well.
Summary: Printers tend to be unwieldy. I generally expect mandatory annoyances, errors, mysteries, and lots of wasted paper and wasted ink when it comes to printing. However, Canon really threw me for a loop with their recent high-quality photo printers. I've had one other model besides the pixma ip8500, and both of them have actually been MUCH easier to work with and much less prone to mayhem than the cheap inkjets and deskjets of the past.
Summary: I bought my iP8500 on eBay as a replacement for an Epson Photo 870. I use the printer primarily for color photo and graphic printing (I have a laser printer for routine text printing). While I felt the Epson had darn good print quality, it had one serious flaw: if you let it sit idle for a week or two, the nozzles would clog and require cleaning. Sometimes it would take several tries to get it going again, and this blew through ink in a big way.
Summary: I bought my Pixma iP8500 brand new and used it very little. When it was working it did a good job, though the quality of the photo prints were not breathtaking. After 2 years the printer quit working from one second to the other. I contacted Canon but they could not help or did not want to. From the official service manual I learnt that the logic board assembly was damaged most probably. A repair would cost more than a new printer. I would not buy this model again.
Summary: I bought this printer a year ago and am just writing a review as it has stood the test of time. I had previously only used epson printers, but as I go thru spurts of printing found that their ink cartridges clogged if not used regularly. The PIXMA IP8500 absolutly does not do this!!!! the 8 tanks allow me to replace only the one color that is out and its QUIET!! nothing like my epsons :) It prints fast quality prints, borderless etc.
Summary: Spectacular photo quality, extremely quiet. Intuitive yet versatile software, and the ink jets self-clean reliably. Also, fairly fast, even in High Quality mode all in an attractive package. Another very nice feature is that it does true automatic two-sided printing, though this is cryptically referred to as "Duplex" printing in the setup. Eight is a lot of $10. ink cartridges to replace, but only a few are used up quickly.
Summary: All I can say is WOW. The print quality on this printer really blew me away. I didn't think it was possible to get photo quailty this good in my own house. Prints come out better than when I send them out. Its a little expensive to maintain (ie inks, paper) but its worth it to me as I no longer have to wait to get my pictures in the mail. If I want pictures, it takes me about 10 minutes to print out a batch.
