Real workhorse of a printer...now if I can only get the grayscaling function to work!

ken yasuda, Amazon
3 May 2014
  • Summary: This is a very fast, efficient printer that I absolutely love...the duplex function works terrific and I printer over 2,500 pages over the first few days...unfortunately, when I started printing pages (PDF format) that contained quite a bit of grayscaling, could not get the printer to recognize this lighter shading...tried all the settings and after 2 calls with Brother support (over 5 hours in total!), came to the conclusion that this printing function won't work..

Pleasantly surprised

tax person, Staples

  • Excerpt: I have just given up my HP loyalty. Too many short lived printers at very high costs. I was surprised to find a Brother printer that is nearly identical to my last HP printer but at 1/3 the price! Toner is cheaper too. Now let's see if it lasts longer that the 3 years I got out of the HP.Only con is that it seems a little noisier than the HP...but maybe it's my imagination. If it lasts more than 3 years I'll give it the 5th star!
  • Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, Fast Print Time, Sharp detail

Small office

Mr. V, Amazon
28 January 2014
  • Summary: This printer replaces an HP laser printer in my Dental office. It is a bit noisey, but is extremely fast! Quality is excellent, but be sure to buy the large toner as the supplied one does not last long. I have always used HP printers at my home and office, but no more. I am happy I tried the Brother and have plans to replace all my printers with the Brother in the future. No more outlandish prices for inks and toners.

Reliable, but with one quirk

Robert Miller "Beto", Amazon
27 January 2014
  • Summary: This printer has a feed problem with paper less than 20# weight, whether in manual or automatic duplex printing. Aside from that, it is reliable and inexpensive to run.

Really like this printer

PM CPA, Staples
10 January 2014
  • Excerpt: Just recently purchased this printer, so I don't know what the toner consumption will be like. It was very easy to set up. When you print, it warms up quickly and the first page is out in a snap. The bypass feed works great. So far no jams or problems at all. Liked the fact that I could purchase an extra high capacity toner that is good for 12,000 pages. This is a rare find in a printer this size and really cuts down on the per page cost of using this machine.
  • Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy To Use, Fast Print Time, Has High Capacity Toner

circuit breaker problems fixed by new firmware

Russ Cox, Amazon
1 January 2014
  • Summary: I love this printer except for the fact that it didn't work in my office - it tripped the circuit breaker nearly every time it turned on. After a year of keeping the printer in the basement, I found an Amazon review of the HL-5470DW saying that similar problems had been fixed by a firmware update. I was skeptical, but I tried updating the firmware to the latest version anyway (1.14, from 10/31/2013). It seems to have worked!

Toss the manual

WASH, Amazon
24 December 2013
  • Summary: The manual for wireless setup makes the setup process more difficult than it is. Toss it. If you've ever set up a wireless device, including printers, it's a simple matter of finding the network and connecting it with the device and installing the print driver. Which I did successfully on a Windows PC, a Mac and a Mac running Parallels. I also was able to print wirelessly from my iPhone and iPad. The setup CD does not have a print driver for Mavericks on the Mac.

Electrical issues

Raplon, Amazon
30 October 2013
  • Summary: I wasn't even able to test the printer out. Tried to power it up a few times and every time it triggered power fuses in my house. I've never experienced anything like this before. My house is a relatively recent construction (2003) and I paid extra for the upgraded electrical system. So, I don't believe my electrical system can be blamed. Also, I run 5 other printers, including 2 Brother color laser multifunction units with absolutely no problem.
