Google Cloud Print feature does not work.

Jonathan Mayer, Amazon
22 July 2014
  • Summary: I have two big problems with this printer: 1. Even though this product advertises "Google Cloud Print" compatibility, this device is not "Google Cloud Print Approved" by Google. Additionally, the GCP feature does not work for myself and many other users (attempts to enable the feature results in a "Internal error" message from the printer).

Fast Printer - Very High Current Draw May Limit Your Using It

G. Langlois, Amazon
13 February 2014
  • Summary: I bought this printer to replace an 8-year old Brother HL-5150D. I got great service from my old laser printer, but it finally croaked so I replaced it with this new, similar model. Rec'd the printer quickly, hooked it up, and printed a test page. Really fast, but also loud. Single & double-sided printing was incredibly fast, so I figured I could live with the increased noise level.

Brother's policy on third party replacement cartridges needs to be disclosed clearly and prominently

Terra Ziporyn, Amazon
18 January 2014
  • Summary: In the past, I have had great success with using Brother machines with third party print cartridges. However, I recently purchased a new HL-5450DN machine and Brother may have changed its policy regarding compatibility with third party print cartridges. My printer currently has the messages "error" and "toner," signifying the toner needs to be replaced. So I purchased a compatible V4INK cartridge and installed it in the printer. The message didn't go away.

Printing is the thing it does well: not waking from sleep and bad setup instructions are the things it does badly

Liah, Amazon
26 December 2013
  • Summary: First things first: you have to wire this printer into your network (attach it to a network router with a cable) before it will join the network and be findable by your mobile devices (iPhone, iPad etc). And not just any cable -- it has to be a Category 5 ethernet cable, NOT a USB cable. Not at all clear from the instructions. Now, this could just be me, although I've seen similar comments from other reviews.

spits out blank pages on reboot

dirkjal, Amazon
12 March 2013
  • Summary: every time the computer was rebooted it would spit out 7 pages with garbage on them immediately at boot up. after spending numerous hours on the phone with worthless tech support and having done firmware updates, downloaded new drivers, and excorcising the demons i finally gave up on using through usb and connected via network. works flawlessly as long as nothing is connected to usb.

Unhappy Camper

F. Galan "researcher", Amazon
8 March 2013
  • Summary: Spent 30 minutes carefully setting up my new printer, reading all instructions, etc. Upon power-up the printer blew out my breaker turning off power in my office. After I got the power back on I found that my relatively new Belkin uninterruptible power supply (UPS) was no longer operational. Come on! This is a printer not an air conditioner! I had a bigger IBM printer that operated without a single power problem. I'm not sure why this printer draws so much power.

User Review

CondoKareninSarasota, Walmart
2 February 2013
  • Summary: I bought this as a printer for our winter condo. My CD drive is broken in the condo computer. So, I was unable to install the printer, which can be installed only by CD. Very disappointed. Will take it to my regular home and hook it up to my other computer there because sending it back is a hassle. Transporting it over 1000 miles in my car is no fun, either. Would not buy an item like this again sight-unseen. Fully expected it to initialize without a CD.

Poor Print Quality

Business Consultant, Staples
7 December 2012
  • Excerpt: It was easy to set up, which is a plus. Prints fast. Copy quality is poor; not sharp. You have to be careful what type of paper you use. I used some laser labels and the ink rubbed off. Not only is copy quality poor, something seems off with the roll/drum because I get smudges on the paper.
  • Pros: Easy To Set Up, Easy to Use, Efficient

trips the AFCI breaker, cannot use

Tek Know Wiz, Amazon
20 May 2012
  • Summary: Just like some of the other reviewers, my printer triggers the AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) breaker in my home. The AFCI is designed to detect low-current sparks or shorts which can cause fires. I don't know what the printer is doing to trigger this, but it is 100% reproducible. The first time, it blew the AFCI immediately after it was turned on. I reset the breaker and tried again. It then blinked all its LEDs.

A bit dissappointed with printer

Jeffrey Lane, Amazon
24 February 2014
  • Summary: Was previously a strong supporter of brother brands but this printer is barely OK. It is compact and fast but it is very noisy and has started leaking ink onto printed paper after only two days of use. Also was lead to believe it could be used by others in office but it isn't a remote printer.
