money pit

Carol B., Newegg
10 January 2011
  • Pros: I like the duplex printer. It does a good job when it works.
  • Cons: Slow starting, hot running. I'm stunned that Brother has the top 5 printers when I sort by customer ratings. My initial problem was that the printer runs hot. I could live with that. But now I'm finding that the drum is going bad before the toner cartridge is even used up. Granted I'm using high ...

2 bad printers in a row

Anonymous, Newegg
30 June 2010
  • Summary: The part I'm really happy about is that they will want a printed invoice as proof of purchase. How do I print an invoice with a nonworking printer? My last printer stopped working so I ended up buying this one.
  • Pros: Relatively Cheap when combined with toner cartridge combo
  • Cons: Had to RMA and the 2nd unit had the exact same problem. It claims to have a paper jam when it doesn't and therefore refuses to print. Unfortunately, I bought the extra toner cartridge with it and so am stuck with a large paper weight. It costs a bit to ship this thing back several times which inc...

Disappointed

GT Man, Amazon
9 May 2010
  • Summary: Have four of these in service. Fast, duplex, long lasting toner (+ you can use the electrical tape mod - google it). UPDATE: Two of these devices started developing issues including not feeding paper from the manual tray properly as well as exhibiting black dots when printing.

Not good for printing envelopes.

David S. Green Brook, NJ USA, Amazon
9 May 2010
  • Summary: I've used other Brother printers in the past several years. Good printers at a fair price. Do not buy this model if you want to print envelopes. The printer ruins every envelope. Purchase the Brother HL-2270DW (for less money)instead.

Postscript--yes; 1200dpi--yes; Both: NO!

Alan Barber, Amazon
4 May 2010
  • Summary: I bought the 5340 for its Postscript emulation and its 1200 dpi resolution. Both are valuable for graphic design using Adobe products. I burned up a whole day trying to install the Postscript capability (the word "Postscript" does not even appear in the manual's index) and trying to get the...

Ok printer but poor quality hardware

D. D. Sauder, Amazon
3 May 2010
  • Summary: I purchased this printer as our old one was worn out and thought that a good little duplex printer would help reduce the amount of paper we consume. The printer is terrible to set up with Windows 7, it has a kludgy print driver install process. After that was complete, it seemed to work pretty good.

Une horreur !

Pierre Rousseau "P.Rousseau", Amazon
11 March 2010
