Summary: I bought this printer 8 years ago when it first hit the market. I have NEVER had a single problem with it and it is still going strong. No jamming, no streaks, no weird errors. It prints clearly and is as reliable as the sun. The high capacity toner cartridges may seem expensive but they last quite a while. I work from home and do a lot of printing and have no complaints about the amount of toner this printer uses.
Summary: Very good relatively high volume printer at a great price. We have worn out a couple of these, but for the money, cannot be beat. Remember to tape over the little window in the toner cartridge when it tells you it is time to replace, you can get at least another 200 impressions before it actually runs out.
Summary: This 5240 replaces a Brother 5140 that broke because of a toner cartridge that had sat on the shelf for two long and got stiff. I already had one 5240 and now have two. The 5140 lasted about 8 years without a glitch and the first 5240 I have has been performing flawlessly for over 3 years. These laser printers may cost a little more than an inkjet but will soon pay for themselves with the savings on toner.
Summary: I have had this printer for 3 years in constant use for printing out .pdf files for research. I have had absolutely no major trouble. I inadvertently overloaded the paper feed and it jammed one time. Look for toner cartridges on line, Staples and Office Max too expensive. I am very pleased with the printers toner life, I go one year on a toner. After three years of ownership, I confidently rate this product as excellent.
Pros: For $175 I didn't think I would get such a dependable machine. It's seen me through the drafting of a 60 page master's thesis, and now I'm using it for my small business.
Cons: It doesn't do envelopes or anything fancy. There's no digital display to tell you if anything is wrong. It's cheap, it's dependable, and really have no complaints -- I didn't need a fancy machine, just a laser printer.
Summary: Having owned an older version of this Brother laser printer for several years, we found ourselves with extra toner cartridges and a printer, though still working, that would only feed with its top-loading feeder and not the higher-capacity tray. Since we had used that model with no negative issues, this newer HL-5240 was the perfect solution. It shadows the functionality of the older printer, with a few minor exceptions and allows us to finish our stock of cartridges.
Summary: We've had this printer for about three years now and are currently on our third toner cartridge. In that time, we haven't had any problems at all with it. Most of the use actually comes from our three kids who tend to do a lot of printing for both school and personal use. For example, our youngest often prints out pages from the Internet that she uses to color.
