Summary: This HL5040 has treated its owner roughly. PAPER: It rolls every sheet of paper it prints, from cheap to heavy-stock resume, to the point that a 10 page document will roll up against the printer and jam the pages that follow. ENVELOPES: I've never gotten a clean return address on an envelope.
Summary: I got this in lieu of my usual HP LaserJet route, and I'm not disappointed. It was very easy to setup and works like a champ. The build quality seemed very good for a printer of this price. The biggest points to me were: Smaller size, USB 2.0, about 17PPM, and 8MB of RAM built-in.
Summary: I purchased my Brother HL-5040 from Amazon.com for $190.00 delivered, including the USB 2.0 cable, and the TN-530 3,000 page "starter" toner cartridge and the DR-500 drum rated for 20,000 pages.
Summary: I bought this printer from Amazon to replace an aging HP Laserjet 5L that needed a major repair. So far I'm very happy with the printer. The print quality is good, the speed is great, and I love the 250 sheet paper tray.
Summary: I have this printer shared between Macs and Windows machines on my home network using a print server. It's a sweet machine. Quick to warm up and fast to print. With 8 Megs of RAM, it has never given me a memory-problem.
Summary: Two problems: 1.) Poor print quality, especially on B&W photos/graphics. The 5040 would not print a full range of tones. No black, just a weak dark gray. Plus roller marks. Un-showable results for sales kits. 2. Print controls were installed in Swedish rather than English.
Summary: I've been struggling to keep my Apple Laserwriter 16/600 running with linux for several years. It's been fantastic. But after my last upgrade to SuSE 8.2, I ran into several problems getting the drivers installed and configured. So, I finally decided it was time to get a new printer.
Summary: Like one of the reviewers said below, the printer occasionally prints out a page with a blank space/white line running horizontally across it. When this happens, it's always with a multi-page document (usually on page 2 ONLY of the document, go figure)!
