Summary: I wish I could give this negative stars. I bought this printer in 2009. From the beginning, it failed to measure up to its hype, and eventually developed into an evil genius that would always come up with a way to prevent me from printing. The startup time was always about 1 minute, and when a page finally began to print it gave off an atrocious stench, and duplex printing took about 3 minutes to print one double-sided page.
Summary: Great printer. Just one major deal killer. This printer is part of a class action law suit filed in New Jersey earlier this year (2010). There are several other models listed. This printer will force you to replace all cartridges when one of the cartridges goes out. It is a shame that a reputable company like Brother and Amazon even allow this to remain on the market. We are on our third complete set of cartridges in just over 4000 pages.

Summary: The original toners for this printer lasted for more than two years. We bought 4 new ones (it takes black, blue, red, and yellow) for well over 300 dollars, and expected them to last over two years. They lasted less than a 6 months. We don't do any more printing now than we did two years ago, maybe less. Now we got a message that we needed the yellow toner. Bought one, installed it, and the light came on again saying we needed the red one. Then the blue one.
Summary: We have owned the Brother 4070CDW for over two years and it has not been a pleasant experience. At first glance this printer is a good value, however it has several major drawbacks, including poor printing quality. -The genuine Brother toner tends to leak out of the cartridge and spill all over the printer. I have contacted Brother a dozen times about this issue and to their credit they sent me a couple new cartridges after verifying my purchase of the cartridge.
Great for the life of the warranty. Died after 4 years

Summary: This printer's not bad, for about the first year, while it's under warranty. So if you're looking for a printer for a year, and then to throw out, this may be the one. After that, forget it. It now frequently jams, and prints smudges all over the paper. I have cleaned it following the instructions on the site to no avail. How do I know this is model specific, and not just mine? A client of mine has the SAME problem with the SAME printer.
Buyers beware - works well briefly, then trouble ensues

Summary: As a graduate student, I was looking for a reliable printer with duplex capabilities to print hundreds of pages of articles and cases while minimizing wasted paper. I purchased this printer approximately two years ago, lured by the (relatively) affordable price and positive reviews. Do not be swayed by the $325 price tag if you want a printer that lasts.
Summary: I know this review is going to be buried, but I hope that you see it. What nobody tells you about this printer is that the three color toner cartridges ALWAYS all go empty at the same time, no matter what you've actually used. So expect a sudden three hundred plus dollar expense every once in a while. And it's apparently by some page count or something rather than actual usage, because you can't get it to accept the ones that you know aren't empty.
With Brothers like this, who needs enemies? Be happy-buy Xerox.

Summary: If you are looking for a printer with the temperament and demands of an A-List Hollywood monster, look no further. Since nothing is all bad, I'll pay this machine the compliment that it never really jammed. That's the only nice thing I can muster about this $500 piece of trash, made worse by the most condescending customer service personnel ever to wear a headset.
won't print with any toner empty warnings (4 cartridges)

Summary: The printer freezes if any of the 4 toner cartridges are either empty or beyond their rated life (even if with toner). Free tech support (LONG hold, then not much help, and hoops to jump through to leave comments for consideration) says nothing can be done. I print almost all B&W, but on Mac OS X I couldn't easily set a default B&W so some were printing as colour. The cost and hassle isn't worth it.
Printer, Brother, + Service Center All Bad! Not Helpful.

Summary: I bought this printer back in Feb. 2008 based on past reviews from others and the printer's great features. Little did I know that 5 months later the printer would fail and not print anymore with some "Print Unable" message. After talking to Brother, they sent me to a service center near by to get it fixed. This printer is sooo heavy (70 lbs.). I knew it was heavy but I never thought I would have to move it. At least not this soon.
