Summary: The machine came packaged very well, unlike my last attempt to purchase one of these units. It works fine except for the manual feed tray - when I try to use it, the printer does not grab the paper; it just makes a noise and refuses to load the paper. Other than that issue, it works as it should. It's an inconvenience, but these units are getting rare, so I guess I was lucky to find one that works.
Summary: I bought this printer in Nov 2009. At first I was fairly happy with it. I had to readjust my color settings to get it to print at an acceptable level. After a few months, I got this annoying dot running through everything in the same place horizontally. I looked online trying to find a solution. No solution to be found. I tried everything and finally gave up on solving that. It wasn't too terrible, I figured.
Summary: I purchased this Brother HL-4040CDN printer for my office. Initially, I loved it because the print quality was excellent. In fact, I purchased a second one for our front office. This was a serious mistake! I should have waited a little longer before investing more money in Brother equipment. The printer requires four separate toner cartridges (which is to be expected) which Amazon offers at roughly $50 each.
Summary: Dollar for dollar this printer has more features than any comparable HP but the color won't impress anyone. The colors are muddy at best and at worst smear down the page, new cartriges don't seem to help. The first page output is slow and for some reason it acts as if it is going to print another page at the end of every print job, which makes the last page output seem slow.
Summary: We bought this printer because using an inkjet printer in high desert country is hard. My cartridges would dry out faster than I could use them. I even put them in plastic bags when I knew I wouldn't be using the printer for a while. This new printer works great. It prints clear and sharp. Tho I'm not doing any kind of presentation or picture prints. Using the Laser color saved us $$$$$ in the long run.
Summary: This printer worked great for a while. Then the cartridges started to "leak". I thought, at first, that it was one badly manufactured cartridge, but it's happened with every cartridge I've used. I've bought several cartridges and they all seem to have the same problem. I have to vacuum out the machine frequently otherwise my pages come out with "laser dust" all over them. Customer Service was no help. Brother products are usually so reliable. Any suggestions?
Summary: Many problems. Envelopes get murdered (unless you turn unit around and flip levers under back cover when doing envelopes) Stops printing when ink level is around 1/2 (cover the toner eyes to get more copies) Rollers won't grab the paper from fold down tray (must help push) Puts 3-4 dots in LH column of paper Many more.
Summary: It's been the nicest overall printer I've ever had! When I buy a printer I look at printing costs as well as reliability and this works out to be lower cost and likely way more reliable than inkjets or many other laser printers. The color quality isn't ink jet photo, but good enough for most of my needs and friends have said it looks better than they've seen come from a laser printer.
Summary: We got this printer a couple of years ago. It does great quality...provided that you install the Brother driver from the disk or website. If you try to use the Windows driver, print quality is rather poor and duplexing doesn't work. Once you get the right driver on your machine, it works like a dream. We have it set up as a network printer serving 2 XP and 1 Win7 machine. It is relatively fast single sided and acceptable duplex speed.
Summary: I bought this when my HL1850DN needed a new toner and drum setup which came to over $280 vs this printer on sale for $249, this followed me home and the extra $40 we saved bought a nice lunch that afternoon. Install was easy, I'd put two more in at work so configuration was fast. Plugged into my network switch and added to my daughters T42, then my T42, my sons T43 and then added to one of the house desktops and my two linux ubuntu boxes with cups.
