Summary: This printer is a nightmare to get to work on Ubuntu. I contacted Brother concerning this and all they do is point you to a printer driver page. Check the web virtually no one is getting this printer to work on Linux.
Oh Brother, Is This Printer A Giant Rip-Off Or What?

Summary: As I have been pleased with Brother printers in the past, I bought this with the expectation that, since it was supposed to be a high volume color printer, I'd get a couple of thousand pages before I'd have to replace the cartridges. WRONG! All I've been able to get are a couple of hundred pages before it stops printing and requires new cartridges (four of them at $75 a clip, mind you). This is the ABSOLUTE WORST piece of office equipment I have ever purchased.
Summary: I have owned this printer around 2 years and like other reviewers, I have had problems with the toner cartridges low yield. I wouldn't have such an issue if the toner was actualy empty! Watched a couple youtube videos on how to reset the flag gear on the cartridge and got another 6 months out of the cartridge. Now why would Brother design a printer to stop printing because of low toner when the toner isn't low...? Money grab.
Summary: I bought this printer 1 year and 3 months ago. It has been a pretty good printer. However, the printer stopped working and displayed the error "Print Unable 73". I googled this and tried a few things to no avail. I contacted the company, and they said since it was over a year old, it was no longer under warranty. Then they gave me a list of authorized services providers. I would have to contact one and pay then to come fix my printer.
Says it's low on ink when it still has at least 1/3 left.

Summary: I bought three of these for my office and have regretted it. I've had them for about a year now and seems like I'm always hearing that they are low on toner. It doesn't even tell you which toner is low. If I perform a reset on the toner, I get about half back so I can use it longer. This printer is inexpensive but the toner is way too expensive. I don't reccomend it.
Think twice before purchasing this not worth the money!

Summary: I purchased this product in July 2011 but did not want to make any snap judgements so waited 5 month hoping it would get better as I got more proficient with the printer as it is complicated. One of the good points would be the print quality is good however every piece of paper curls and if you use card stock it curls so bad I have done everything to try to solve that but we are the laughing stock at school every one know who printed it.
Summary: I've had a number of printers over the year and had always avoided Brother after having numerous problems with a Brother fax machine years ago. Unfortunately, I decided to give this printer a try. First problem: I was never able to get the printer onto my network--a problem I've never had with any other network equipment or computers (that should have been my signal to return it immediately).
Summary: I bought this to replace an inkjet printer which suddenly died. Realizing that these printers have come down in price, and that Brother is a reputed brand, I was expecting print quality to exceed any inkjet printer for black and to be not far off for colour. I have to say I am disappointed with this purchase. Setup at first was easy. Print quality is at best ok for black but colour is terrible. Also sometimes things print out scaled down and they are unreadable.
Pros: -Solid, - Cheap, - Known brand
Cons: Print quality not at all great apart from black, Difficult to set up
Summary: My only problem with the HL-3040cn is that printing is somewhat out of alignment, which looks bad and can make reading some of its output difficult. The tools to get it into alignment aren't working and Brother hasn't been able to help.
