Summary: For home or small office, these little Brother printers are hard to beat. Really like the paper tray inside the printer, as opposed to the less expensive HP printers with the paper exposed. You will have a difficult time printing envelopes. You have to play with the manual paper guides until you get alignment right. WARNING: Brother printers are apparently notorious for false Low Toner warning pop-ups.
Summary: The Brother HL2230 is a very good printer with high print speed and low ink usage. It is fairly compact, measuring about a foot and a half square and half a foot tall, and had a very easy installation process. My only complaint would be the noise. It is not extremely loud like other printers (in fact, the page printing is very quiet), but its fan can generate some annoying background noise if you're the type of person who leaves it on all the time.
Summary: This is the worst printer I ever worked with. From the beginning the toner light was blinking and then it would light up and stop printing. Removing the cartridge would restart printing temporarily. Then it stopped printing with the toner light on. I changed the toner cartridge for a new one and the toner light would stay on and no printing possible. I read the instructions and was amazed that the toner light does not reset if a cartridge from other printer is installed.
Summary: I have purchased over 8 of these and similar models on the low end brother laserjet spectrum of printers, 2170W's etc. These things all have issues with wanting their toner being replaced before they are actually empty. I found myself taping up the toner carrier to disable the level sensor so that the printer would just print until the toner was out. They are taking people to the cleaners with buying toner when they don't need it.
Good personal printer and a little cheat to extend toner

Summary: Good personal printer. While this printer isn't made for massive printing jobs, it does an excellent job of printing smaller jobs with no problem. The only problem is Brother's toner sensor that will prevent the printer from printing when it senses the toner is low. Take a little piece of electrical tape and a paper clip to tuck it snugly into the clear sensor opening on the toner cartridge at the ends.
Keeps being offline when connected to the computer
11 December 2013
Summary: Using PC with Windows 7, I plug the printer in when I need to print. Unfortunately, I have to plug it and unplug, power off and on the printer for several times before it gets connected to my machine. Reinstallation of drivers as well as other troubleshooting tricks provided by the Brother company did not help. The same happens on another computer.
Great printer but starter cartridge will not last long.

Summary: Great printer but starter cartridge comes almost empty. I would've given this a 5* but the starter cartridge's capacity was a disappointment. I ended up buying a toner kit from ebay. It is a bit messy but doable (the started cartridge has a different mechanism so if you decide to refill, make sure to buy the kit). If you are not sure what to get feel free to ask.
Summary: It worked fine for 2 months then after changing the toner once no lights would come on wouldn't print. couldn't even uninstall and reinstall drivers. Nothing. Junk. On top of that I can't even return it. What a waste.
Summary: I could have bought this printer 20 times over with the money I'm saving, not paying exorbitant prices for ink cartridges for ink jet printers. I should have purchased this printer years ago. My print needs are pretty basic. I don't like to read stuff on my computer screen. Instead, I copy and paste articles into my word processing program and create a daily "newspaper" for myself that I can pick up and take to another room to read at my leisure.
