"Horrible drivers and firmware"

qasdzxc, CNET
27 May 2010
  • Pros: Printed... for a while
  • Cons: Doesn't print anymore because the printer bombards itself with worthless notifications of problems I have/had already fixed multiple times. I am never buying a brother product again and no one else should either

Automatic Wireless (one-push button) Method Did Not Work

Robert Sorrentino, Amazon
6 January 2010
  • Summary: The Brother HL-2170W was returned for several reasons. 1. Brother advertises that this model supports the Secure Easy Setup for configuring the machine easily without a computer. That is why I purchased the printer. My access point for the machine is a Linksys WRT54GL router which also supports SES. I followed the Brother Quick Setup Guide for configuring the printer using the automatic wireless (one-push button) method. It is a 19 step procedure.

"Absolutely awful time getting wi-fi printing to work"

gniewko, CNET
12 January 2009
  • Pros: It's cheap
  • Cons: I spent 3 hours getting the wi-fi printing to work. Do NOT buy this printer if you want to print over wi-fi.

Wireless connection is too complicated

D. Pinelle "Home Theater Enthusiast", Amazon
11 October 2008
  • Summary: Bought the Brother HL-2170w printer to help me with my consulting business, to print b/w documents inexpensively for things like short letters, etc. The Brother MFC-685CW ink jet printer I already had hooked to my wireless network with no effort at all, and I expected the same with the 2170. Well, spent half a Saturday trying to get this to work on my network, and finally got it to work, kind of.

User Review

FXA, CNET
12 August 2008
  • Summary: The Brother HL-2170W would be better used as a paper weight then as a printer. It needs a new toner every 2600 and a drum every 12,000.
  • Pros: Cheap to buy
  • Cons: cost way to much to buy
