Summary: I purchased this printer back in 2000, it is now 2014 and I still use the same printer. I have only had to replace cartridges and it's about time to do some cleaning but it rarely ever gets jams if any and has not failed yet. I've worked on a lot of newer printers and they aren't made like they used to be.
Summary: The vendor - Hvac-r Doctors shipped a HL-1240 printer packed in pieces of white plastic, odd pieces of paper and card board that looked like floor sweepings. It was immediately apparent that the front cover was missing exposing the cartridge assemble. Also a plastic arm, which may have been connected to the cover, was sticking out.
Summary: This is my second Brother HL-1240. My first one gave my son very good service for a number of years. He got a larger one and gave it to me, and I used it for a year, I got another one because of the price and quality. I use it in my office.
Summary: I still use One Write Plus, a DOS general ledger package, and this brother printer allows me to print accounting statements from Windows XP. It is extremely reliable and user friendly. I also can print anything from windows XP. So happy to be able to locate this great printer.
Summary: I've had my HL-1240 for nearly 9-10 YEARS!! It's still the hardest working thing in my house! This wonderful printer has seen my husband through his PhD, my MA, and continues to be a workhorse. Toner is a tad pricey - but the big toner lasts me nearly an entire year w/heavy printing. I'd love to find a laser color printer that works as efficiently and as hard as the HL-1240. I absolutely LOVE this printer!
Works well with either Mandrake or Debian Linux (Knoppix )

Summary: Since this printer was very unreliable for me under any version of windows, I was decided to try it under Linux with hope it would work. To my surprise, both distros of Linux I use recognized it immediately and installed drivers. It has been working perfectly as a network printer for my network ever since. Any other Linux or OSX machine on the network finds this printer automatically with no assistance. Very cool.
Summary: I have been using my Brother laser printer for about two and a half years, and I am very very pleased with its performance. I currently have three different printers on my desk (yes, a large desk with no space left), and the HL-1240 is the work-horse of the bunch. Almost all printed material gets sent to the HL-1240 because of its speed, quality print, and economy.
Summary: I bought two of these for home use about two years ago. They see moderate, not heavy, use. Both tend to produce smudged printouts. Cleaning is somewhat tedious, and needs to be done weekly. One of the two jams fairly often, considering its light workload. I had no problems printing from Windows 2000; however, when I upgraded to Windows XP the print quality was unacceptable when using XP's default driver.
Summary: I bought this printer last June for my 78-year-old mother and she lives 2,000 miles away. It was a breeze to install on her USB port on her Compaq Presario notebook (I installed it for her when I visited, shortly after Amazon shipped the printer). Mom hasn't had a bit of problems with it in all this time, and she definitely is NOT computer/printer literate at all.
