Summary: I have lots of experience with computers and networking, but could not get this print server to work. Tech support finally told me it wasn't compatible with my printer. I finally got my printer networked by installing the driver on my Windows Home Server (WHS) and connecting the printer, via USB, to it. I had read that it's best not to install software and drivers on the WHS, which is why I ordered this print server.
Summary: First, ignore the review by the person that said that it doesn't work with Vista 64 bit. I am convinced that they don't know what they are talking about. Call D-Link tech support if you have problems. I was VERY impressed with the communications skills and tech savvy of the person on the other end of the line (probably India). I have had this print server for over 6 months.
Summary: Purchased this from a local retailer for $20 plus tax - a really good deal. Connected to an H-P LJ-1012 which is a basic laser printer model from about 4 years ago. I'm a mid-level PC user, understand the lexicon but don't know the technical standards. Basically, this device is hit or miss with your setup, and you won't get any help from D-Link, not by e-mail and the FAQ really sucks. Here's my experience.
Summary: I got the D-Link DP-301U Ethernet Print Server from Fry's about a month ago and was not able to get the supplied CD software to install. I was trying to use the software on a Lenovo X301 Laptop with Windows Vista Business 64 bit. As a result, I returned the item. The product packaging has written on the outside of the box "compatible with Vista", but does not specify which version of Vista.
Summary: I once bought a Netgear Print Server about 2yrs ago and it did not work. Thought all Printer servers are the same and assuming the high-ends version are better, but out of my price range. Today (Oct 17, 2009), I saw this D-Link DP-301U at Fry's for $19.99 bought and give it another try with my Canon D320 ImageClass it works as charm. Very easy to find the Printer Server specific IP & MAC ID by looking up the via my Wireless Router.
Summary: I've installed a lot of print servers in the past, mostly HP JetDirects. They all just work. This, on the other hand, is utter garbage. It is ridiculously difficult to set up, it crashes all the time, and never prints anything right -- on my laser printers and ink jets both, every printout comes out off-center or even running off the edge of the page. Avoid, avoid, avoid. I didn't even bother returning it for a return, I threw it straight into the e-waste bin.
Summary: I have it for several days. Works grate with my Brother HL-2140 printer. As others mentioned setup is a bit tricky. Works in my home network with several wireless and wired computers. So far, so good.
Summary: I expected my HP Deskjet 932C USB printer to work without a problem ("HP is one of the most popular printer models...everything's compatible with it"). Nope. Like others have stated, you need to check the compatibility list before you buy the DP-301U. Problem is that I didn't know there WAS a compatibility list for a USB device like this. I should have read Amazon reviews first.
Summary: Worked as advertised for me. I have a wired/wireless home network with a mix of XP and Vista machines. I bought the DP-301U to connect a USB version of the HP DeskJet 5740 printer to the network for shared printing. Printing is fast, and I've noticed very little difference in speed over the direct USB connection configuration. It's been deployed for 6 weeks, and I've not had any trouble, or even a print server reboot.
Works, but setup was a little cumbersome because of its IP address of 192.168.0.10. wireless router gets disconnected

Summary: The setup instructions are good. However, you have to first connect to its default IP address of 192.168.0.10 -- which can be a pain because most default routers are on 192.168.1.x Changing the 1 to a 0 is theoretically fine, but you will lose connectivity in the middle several times. I just bought the print server, so my experience is only for a few hours. It's working for me currently. However, I'm noticing that my laptop is losing its wireless connectivity frequently.
