Fractal Design NEWTON R3 800 W
18 November 2013
Summary: The Newton R3 800 W model managed to register better performance than its bigger brother, the R3 1000W, mostly because of the significantly lower ripple I measured on the minor rails. The extra polymer caps that were used on the modular PCB apparently did the trick. The unit's overall performance was great, with tight voltage regulation on all rails, high efficiency, and the +12V's very good response to sudden transient loads.
Pros: Delivered full power at 46°C, Tight voltage regulation, Good ripple suppression, Efficient, Performance of +12V in Advanced Transient Response tests, Semi-fanless operation, Quiet fan under normal conditions, Stealth modular cables, 5 year warranty
Cons: High price, Low hold-up time, There could be less native cables
Summary: I have to say that I had high hopes for the Newton R3 800W power supply and it delivered on most of them. The power supply looks great visually and on paper it is very promising, offering high efficiency with quality components throughout the entire unit.
Excerpt: In the ever changing computer power supply market, companies are constantly trying to outdo each other when it comes to earning your business. Today, I have a unit from a newcomer to the site in Fractal Design. The unit in question is the Newton R3 1000 watt power supply. This is an 80 Plus Platinum certified unit with a single big 80A 12V rail that wants to be your next power supply. Let's find out if it's worthy of that honor.
Fractal Design Newton R3 800 W Power Supply Review
22 March 2013
Summary: The Fractal Design Newton R3 800 W power supply has very strong points, such as an outstanding 2.2% voltage regulation, low noise and ripple levels, decent cable configuration with six connectors for video cards, high efficiency, and a fan that kicks in only when you pull at least 50% of its labeled wattage, allowing you to have a powerful yet silent power supply. The only negative is its price, but we hope it drops after it reaches the market.
Summary: The fresh Newton R3 with 1 kW capacity is a very good performer, with the exception of high ripple on the minor rails. It managed to keep tight voltage regulation on all rails despite the tough conditions I used for all tests, and the efficiency levels it achieved were simply amazing. I think this platform has much potential, and the new Newton would gain a much higher placement, near the top of the corresponding performance graph, if ripple on the minors were lower.
Pros: Delivered full power at 45°C, Decent price/performance ratio, Highly efficient throughout all load range, Good enough ripple suppression at +12V, Tight voltage regulation, Semi-fanless operation, Quiet fan under normal conditions, Stealth modular cables, 5 year warranty
Cons: Ripple suppression on the minor rails, Low hold-up time, There could be less native cables
Summary: Final Thoughts
The Newton is the first power supply we have taken a look at from Fractal Design and I have to say I am very impressed. With the Newton Fractal Design wants you to know you are receiving a premium product and from unboxing to installation the power supply gives you that feeling.
When it comes down to performance the Newton R3 600W did great. Voltage regulation on both the 12V and 5V rails was under 1% and the 3.3v rail was just over 1%.
Pros: – Good performance, – Semi modular, – 80PLUS Platinum certified, – Attention to detail in packaging & design, – 5 year warranty

Excerpt: 1 Flares 1 Flares × Fractal Design have been hitting the headlines over the last 12 months for their array of class leading, low noise chassis designs. There is no doubt that products such as their Node 605 , 304 , Core 3000 and Define XL are market leaders while being offered at competitive prices. Today however we are looking at their latest high end power supply, the NEWTON R3 1000W, a modular unit with Platinum efficiency.
