Excerpt: It's the size of an old desktop computer, but if you can mange to tuck it away, it's a useful kind of thing... My building suffers brownouts during the summer and during severe storms. I have backup drives that stay on. This thing will not auto power down the systems, but it'll give me a chance to shut them down during a power outage...
Summary: I had a power "brown-out" that caused me to get the blue screen of death. Had to completely restore my PC. No data loss since I had backups. However, it takes a long time to re-install the programs and go through their updates. I purchased the APC backup after this incident so that I would not have to go through this again. Unbelievably, about 1 week later the entire neighborhood had a power outage that lasted for over 3 hours.
Summary: I have used APC brand UPS units for over 30 years and in fact this one was a replacement for a 5 year old APC 1300 which I thought was failing but turned out to be one of the batteries failed. No problem as I replaced both batteries in the older unit so now have a spare . I may use it to divide the load up for increased uptime during power outages which brings me to the software / Power Chute issue.
Excerpt: I bought the ups for a file server I built that can't tolerate sudden power cuts. I could have gotten by with a smaller unit but luckily this one has enough extra capacity to also keep my modem and router running for a prolonged period without mains power. I took off one star only because the documentation is extremely basic and does not cover setup other than the most basic "plug in and go".
